BCCC breaks ground on new walking trail | Eastern NC Now

    Beaufort County Community College broke ground this week on a new walking trail that will give the community a convenient place to exercise and enjoy nature at the same time.

    Construction of the walking trail is funded by a $150,000 grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust as part of Healthy Places North Carolina, a long-term trust initiative to improve health and health care in rural, financially disadvantaged North Carolina counties.

    Beaufort County is one of four counties the trust has invited to participate in Healthy Places N.C.

    Money from the grant is being used to build a mile-long walking trail that can be enjoyed free of charge by residents of all ages and fitness levels.

    The trail will include fitness stations, as well as places to rest, and will be open to the public. Trail patrons will visit multiple parts of the BCCC grounds as they complete the one-mile circuit.

    "BCCC is delighted to begin work on this walking trail," said BCCC President Barbara Tansey. "We look forward to its use by members of the college family and the local community."

    Multiple community organizations including the Mid-East Commission Area Agency on Aging, the Beaufort County Developmental Center, Life Quest, Inc., and others worked to make the trail a reality and plan to incorporate use of the trail into their programming to help promote long-term health and fitness.

    The contractor for the trail is Norstate Contracting, Inc., of Greenville. Construction is expected to be completed ahead of schedule - for use later this year.
