2008: Hagan Promised A "World-Class" Health-Care System For Veterans Now: Hagan Is Silent On The VA Scandal

ENCNow
Press Release:

During the 2008 campaign, both Barack Obama and Kay Hagan promised to push for a "world-class" health-care system for our nation's veterans.

"Earlier in the day at VFW state headquarters in Raleigh, Hagan argued that she would be a stronger advocate for veterans and promised to work for a 'world-class' system of health care for veterans." (Rob Christensen, "Hagan, Dole Weigh In For Military Vote; Hagan Promises 'World-Class' Health Care System For Veterans. Dole Cites Her Record In Washington," The News And Observer, 9/13/08)

However, the recent VA hospital scandal has made it evident that the VA system has gotten even worse over the last six years, failing to provide world-class health-care to many of our nation's brave veterans who deserve so much better.

Last month, CNN reported that at least 40 veterans died while waiting for an appointment to see a doctor. Those veterans were placed on a secret waiting list. On Tuesday, the VA Inspector General announced 26 hospitals are now under investigation.

In a rare display of bipartisanship in Washington, both Democrats and Republicans have called for immediate accountability and action and have criticized President Obama's lack of urgency to make sure these deplorable incidents never happen again.

Congressman David Scott (D-GA) gave a speech on the House Floor yesterday, in which he called on President Obama to step up his sense of urgency and roll up his sleeves.

"'I was terribly disappointed with President Obama today,' Scott lamented, saying he saw 'no sense of urgency' about stories that started out in Phoenix but have grown quickly in the last few weeks. 'Mr. President, we need urgency,' Scott said, his voice rising in the Well of the House. 'We need you to roll up your sleeves and get into these hospitals.'" (Jamie Dupree, "Cracks appear among Democrats over VA troubles," Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 5/21/14)

Unfortunately, it appears that Senator Hagan has remained silent throughout the VA scandal, demonstrating a lack of initiative and willingness to call for action. It's time for her to end that silence.

Today, U.S. Senate candidate Thom Tillis issued the following statement:

"Kay Hagan and President Obama both promised to create a world-class system for our veterans in 2008, but the recent VA scandal has made it clear that there is a systematic bureaucratic breakdown within the VA. It's a national travesty that is creating a crisis of confidence. The President's lack of urgency and Senator Hagan's silence are not helping matters. This is not a partisan issue—we cannot afford to wait any longer. We need immediate action and swift accountability to make sure this never happens again. As a U.S. Senator, I will use every means necessary to ensure that Washington never abandons our brave servicemembers and veterans."
