McCrory: "Signing the legislation to make these payments possible was among the most gratifying actions I have taken as governor"

Raleigh, NC – Governor Pat McCrory announced today that initial payments will be mailed to the victims of the Eugenics Board of North Carolina. The payments were made possible when Governor McCrory signed the budget bill that included funding championed by former Representative Larry Womble and other legislators.

"Today is a day of reconciliation and healing," said Governor McCrory. "Signing the legislation to make these payments possible was among the most gratifying actions I have taken as governor. While no amount of money could undo the wrong that was done to these victims, I hope these payments bring some solace in their acknowledgment that the actions of the Eugenics Board were wrong. This is a new day for us all and brings us nearer to closing one of North Carolina's darkest chapters."

The compensation program was made possible thanks to a $10 million appropriation in the 2013-2014 budget. The funds will be divided equally among qualified recipients as of June 30, 2015, pending open cases. The Industrial Commission determines compensation eligibility.
