Two members of Vidant's Home Health and Hospice team recognized for outstanding service

Greenville, NC –   Two of Vidant's Home Health and Hospice team members were recognized by state organizations for outstanding service in caring for patients.

This year, Vidant Home Health and Hospice's Pam Cowin, administrator for Vidant Home & Transitional Care, received the "Leslie Carswell Leader of the Year" award from the Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina. The group presented the award for outstanding merit and excellence for the example she sets for her team every day. The Carolina's Center for Hospice and End of Life Care presented the "Sharon O. Dixon" award to Angelina Brittle, a social worker for Vidant Home Health and Hospice, recognizing her clinical experience.

"Pam and Angelina exemplify the exceptional leadership, passion and care our team delivers every day, settling for nothing less than the best care possible for each patient," said Scottie Gaskins, Senior Administrator, Vidant HealthAccess. "These awards affirm that Pam and Angelina are among the best of the best of Home and Hospice Care leaders in the Carolinas, truly incredible people providing incredible care every day."

In 2014, more than 3,500 patients in eastern North Carolina welcomed Vidant Home Health and Hospice staff into their lives and their homes to provide health care and support. Using a team approach, Vidant works to meet the clinical needs as well as the emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients and families while they are recovering from illness or injury and for those facing terminal illness.

"During the month of November the home health and hospice community honor the nurses, aides, therapists, social workers and support staff across the region that make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve, allowing patients to receive high quality clinical care in the comfort of their own home," said Gaskins.

Vidant's Home Health and Hospice team serves patients and families in 13 counties. Patients are admitted to Home Health with a referral from their doctor often after illness, injury or surgery, to provide skilled nursing, therapy and other services to help the patient recover in the comfort of their home. Patients have a choice of what home health agency cares for them and should base their decision on which agency has the highest quality scores and best reputation for care. Anyone can review the publically reported quality scores on www.medicare.gov/homehealthcompare.

Vidant is proud to be a superior quality performer in eastern NC for home health. For hospice, team members usually connect with families when a patient has a life expectancy of six months or less. Whenever possible, hospice care takes place in the patient's home. For hospice patients requiring a higher level of care, Vidant Health offers The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice.

"Hospice isn't about dying. It's about living with comfort and dignity. It's about providing our patients — and your loved ones — with the highest quality of life for whatever time remains," said Gaskins.
