BCCC Foundation Trip To DPAC Is Planned! | Eastern North Carolina Now

Join the Beaufort County Community College Foundation, Saturday, Feb. 21, for a trip to Durham to see the stage production of MOTOWN, the Musical, the story of Motown founder Berry Gordy.

The trip is tentatively scheduled to include a meeting with and discussion led by Ralph G. Barrett, assistant professor and chairman of the Department of Music at North Carolina Central University.

The cost of the trip, open to all BCCC students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the college, is $200 per person. The registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 16.

The price of the trip includes transportation to and from Durham, lunch and tickets for seats in the orchestra section for MOTOWN, the Musical, at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.

The trip will leave the parking lot at BCCC by 7:30 a.m. and travel to Durham, where they are scheduled to meet with Barrett. A native of the Philadelphia area, Barrett holds a doctorate in conducting from the University of South Carolina, among other degrees. He is a retired U.S. Navy musician and band officer, having served 28 years in the military. He has performed or recorded with Natalie Cole, Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Jim Nabors, among other musical luminaries.

The group will travel from the NCCU to lunch at Ed Mitchell's Que for a meal of fried chicken, pork barbecue or ribs, traditional sides and banana pudding prepared by one of North Carolina's most renowned pitmasters. Mitchell carries on the tradition of whole-hog barbecue, when a pig was cooked at a time of celebration. He prepares his barbecue using a 150-year-old family recipe.

After lunch, the group will travel to DPAC for a matinee performance of MOTOWN, the musical, the true American dream story of Gordy's journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. Featuring classic songs such as "My Girl" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the stage production includes many of Motown's most famous songs.

After the performance, participants will depart Durham for the trip home and enjoy light refreshments on the bus.

For more information, or to register, contact Marcia Norwood, Foundation specialist, at 252-940-6218.
