Pope Center's Schalin documents growth of groups nationwide


    RALEIGH     Amid horror stories about speech codes, grade inflation, and political correctness run amok on college campuses across the country, there's been one major positive development in recent years: the emergence of independent academic centers. The more than 150 centers focus on topics such as history, economics, and politics in a traditionally objective manner.

    Jay Schalin, director of policy analysis at the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, highlighted those centers during a presentation Monday for the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society.

    His speech covered themes from his recent Pope Center report Renewal in the University. In the video clip below, Schalin suggests a key reason for the centers' growth in the recent years.
