Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C. — Governor Pat McCrory will be appearing on CBS News Sunday Morning on May 24, 2015 to discuss North Carolina's Veterans Treatment Courts.

"North Carolina is home to more than 800,000 veterans who risked their lives to keep us safe," said Governor McCrory. "Veteran Treatment Courts give us the chance to return the favor by providing our veterans with the support, services and second chance they deserve."

North Carolina's first Veterans Treatment Court is located in Harnett County and was established in 2013 with a grant from the Governor's Crime Commission. A second Veterans Treatment Court opened this past November in Cumberland County.

The court provides veterans who have pending criminal charges the opportunity to resolve those criminal charges with assistance from fellow veterans and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Support from Veterans service organizations to address treatment, rehabilitation, employment and housing is also accessible.

Successful completion of the Veterans Treatment Court may result in no jail or prison time, or the conviction may be reduced or set aside. To ensure only appropriate crimes are considered, court eligibility is based upon severity of the offense and the veteran's discharge level.

Veterans Treatment Court diverts veterans from the traditional criminal justice system, while keeping them judicially monitored, and provides them with support to lead productive lives through referrals to treatment, education and vocational programs, and community resources.

While the show is subject to change, the piece is expected to air this Sunday. CBS Sunday Morning airs Sundays from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time.
