Dueling Hits - Jim Croce - 1972 | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's note: I have initiated this new segment on BCN, where I determine the Best Music Ever ... and, 'with a little help from my friends'. I do this from my opinion, for what that is worth, where I will measure the best music that I am familiar with.

I do this for two reasons: 1) I want to expose the best music that I know to the rest of us. 2) Popular Music today may be the very worst it has ever been, and that is saying much, since I lived through Disco.

For a list of all of the contributions to this series, please click here.

As previously mentioned, there will be others who share their favorites with our BCN readers, in particular here, Bobby Tony.

No trip down memory lane would be complete without a few sad songs mixed with a couple of good old boy hits by Jim Croce. But if you have ever stood in a phone booth late at night drunk as a skunk and tried to make that one call that would make all the difference in your life, then you can relate to Jim for what may be his biggest hit. Operator.

One would be hard put to limit the songs on this album to just two or three but, I'll try to highlight a couple of lesser known songs from the album "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" as well as Operator his signature song.

"Operator" - I had a friend once like this.

Thanks to Bev who was too young and I was too old.

    "A Long Time Ago"

I was living in a 1965 VW bug with everything I owned in the back seat. I was just a bit pissed off at the world and looking for the comfort of home, but .....

    "Walkin' Back to Georgia"

He died far too young. He was like a second Buddy Holly in both the good, and very sad way.
