JLF panel highlights problems linked to N.C. certificate-of-need law



    Higher health care costs, poorer access to care, and less innovation are among the casualties of North Carolina's certificate-of-need law. A John Locke Foundation panel discussion Tuesday afternoon at the state Legislative Building explained why.

    Moderated by host Tom Campbell of "N.C. Spin," the panel featured Sen. Ralph Hise, R-Mitchell; Chris Koopman, research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University; Katherine Restrepo, JLF health and human services policy analyst; and Dr. John Hicks, orthopedic spine surgeon at Blue Ridge Bone and Joint.



Electromagnetic pulse attack would kill off most Americans



    Nine out of 10 Americans could die if the nation suffers an attack involving an electromagnetic pulse. The Heritage Foundation's top foreign and defense policy expert delivered that warning Monday during a presentation to the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society.

    James Carafano wrapped his comments about EMP around a screening of the movie "33 Minutes: Protecting America in the New Missile Age." In the video clip above, he explains why we should be concerned about an EMP attack that would disable the American electrical grid and leave the nation powerless.
