Smartphone workshops

These small classes will provide you with the instruction and guidance you need to use the Android phone, iPhone, iPad or Android tablet you bring to class. Matthew Manning will add to your knowledge of apps, security settings, set-up options and entertainment features. These advanced classes will teach students to take pictures, share them and use cloud storage. The advanced Android class will take place on Tuesday, May 31 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and costs just $15. The advanced iPhone class will take place on Thursday, June 2 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and costs just $15.

Art in the Garden Excursion

The NC Museum of Art's current exhibition, Childe Hassam and the Isles of Shoals, helps explain America Impressionism and its fascination with gardens. Students will learn much from Hassam's colorful paintings of Celia Thaxter's New Hampshire garden, and will discover new ways to appreciate their own eastern NC gardens. On Tuesday, June 7, Kieth Lyon, BCCC history instructor, will present a program on American Impressionism and its links to the late 19th century Garden Movement.

On Saturday, June 11, the class will travel to Raleigh and enjoy a docent-led tour of the Childe Hassam exhibition. The class will also have time to explore the Marks of Genius: 100 Extraordinary Drawings exhibit. Participants can eat at Iris, the museum's restaurant, if they choose. Afterwards the class will stroll the J.C. Raulston Arboretum perennial border. Students will return home inspired to paint, garden or both. The all-inclusive fee for the class is $75.

Facebook Workshops

Facebook has revolutionized the way we stay in touch with our friends, kids, grandchildren, and even the institutions and businesses we support. Jessica Crocker will show students the best way to use this social media application. She can take students from setting up an account to the best practices for managing an existing page. She will explain posting pictures, sharing videos and music, and security measures. Students will spend three hours in a computer lab learning about features. The cost of this course is just $25. Two sessions will take place on Wednesday, June 15, one beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the other beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Kitchen Design Workshop

Stacey Fuldner, interior designer, will take participants through a step-by-step review of her kitchen redesign and renovation. She shares useful guidelines from the National Kitchen and Bath Association along with architectural standards for kitchens. Participants can bring individualized plans to work on during the class. Students will have the knowledge and confidence to carry out renovations after the class. One session takes place on Wednesday, June 8 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Another session will take places on Thursday, June 9 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. This class costs only $20.
