Transplant Specialist Brings Expertise To Brody, Vidant Medical Center | Eastern NC Now

    GREENVILLE, N.C.     It is with great pleasure that the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Vidant Medical Center welcome Dr. David A. Axelrod to their surgery faculty and staff.

    Axelrod joins the ECU Department of Surgery as professor of surgery, vice-chair for Quality, and as chief of surgical immunology and transplantation, having recently been chief of transplant at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire and liver transplant surgeon at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. He is a nationally-recognized leader in the field of transplant surgery, outcomes research and quality initiatives for improvement in patient care.

    Axelrod earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham. He also earned an MBA in health care management from Duke University Fuqua School of Business. He completed training at the University of Michigan in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and completed a Transplant Surgery Fellowship at Northwestern University Hospital Surgery.

    He currently serves as associate editor of the American Journal of Transplantation and section editor of Current Transplantation Reports. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the United Network for Organ Sharing and served as past chairman of the national pancreas transplant committee. He has also been a leader in the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, serving as chairman of the Business Practice and Standards committees.
