    Good Afternoon:

I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that Beaufort County has been placed in a Flash Flood Watch during the specified time period on the watch. The Pamlico and Pungo Rivers are at bank full and overflowing in some areas of the County at the present time. While Hurricane Matthew may not visit Beaufort County directly we will experience some weather impacts from his passing near us: three to five inches of rain are possible with wind gust as high as 35mph and one to two feet of storm surge in parts of the rivers.

We will publish more information tomorrow as more accurate information about Hurricane Matthew's possible brush with Beaufort County becomes available to us. I have include the latest briefing update from the NWS in Newport.

    Flash Flood Watch

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEWPORT/MOREHEAD CITY HAS ISSUED

    * FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR A PORTION OF EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA...INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS...BEAUFORT...MAINLAND DARE...MAINLAND HYDE...MARTIN...OUTER BANKS DARE...OUTER BANKS HYDE...PITT...TYRRELL AND WASHINGTON.

    * FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON

    * HEAVY RAIN IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FRIDAY NIGHT AND CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY. THIS RAIN FALLING ON WET GROUND WILL INCREASE THE RISK OF FLASH FLOODING.

    * POOR DRAINAGE AND LOW LYING URBAN AREAS ALONG WITH LOCATIONS NEAR CREEKS AND STREAMS WILL BE MOST PRONE TO FLOODING CONDITIONS DURING THIS EVENT. HIGH WATER ON AREA ROADS MAY MAKE THEM IMPASSABLE IN SPOTS.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

    Stay safe and "Weather Aware".

Latest Governing Beaufort County

The city council has only made two official acts as of February 16, 2026
While this afternoon’s update once again included increased probabilities of moderate to major impacts, it will likely be tomorrow before we receive specific accumulation details.
Government and its bureaucracy are not perfect, and never has been in this self-governed society, here at the local level, at our state level, and at our federal level, therefore, it is incumbent upon all elected politicians to seek a comfortable level of representation for our constituents.

Beaufort County is implementing a new emergency alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts via phone and email.
Has the local government acted responsibly and transparently?
