Alexander Hamilton’s ‘liberalism’ explained

Alexander Hamilton was a liberal. But that doesn't mean what many people today think it means. That was the gist of Duke professor Richard Salsman's presentation Monday to the John Locke Foundation's Shaftesbury Society.

Far from being a modern-day progressive, the nation's first treasury secretary was actually a "classical" liberal. He was interested in liberty, limited government, and rule of law under the U.S. Constitution. That means his political philosophy diverges drastically from views espoused by today's left-of-center thinkers.
