New Cardiothoracic Surgeon Joins Brody School of Medicine, Vidant Medical Center | Eastern NC Now

    GREENVILLE     The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and Vidant Medical Center (VMC) welcome a new cardiothoracic surgeon, who joins a multidisciplinary team of specialists using combined advanced therapies to help patients overcome even the most life-threatening illnesses.

    Dr. Aundrea Oliver joins the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Brody. She will be an assistant professor of thoracic and foregut surgery within the medical school and will perform surgeries at the East Carolina Heart Institute at Vidant Medical Center. She will also care for patients in the cardiac and cardiovascular intensive care units.

    Her clinical interests include benign and malignant foregut and pulmonary disease, as well as chest wall and mediastinal disease. Her research interests include translational oncologic research, clinical trials and access to medical care, particularly the socioeconomics of eastern North Carolina.

    "In this region we are tasked with the challenge of significant benign and malignant surgical pathology," Oliver said. "In addition, the heavy incidence of lung cancer within eastern North Carolina provides both the opportunity and the responsibility to care for and educate patients and families dealing with lung cancer."

    A native of Kansas, Oliver earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard University. She has a background in basic and translational cancer research, having spent time at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston University. She earned a Doctor of Medicine from Boston University School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She began her cardiothoracic training at Vanderbilt University and completed it at the East Carolina Heart Institute at VMC.
