Melania Trump Reveals Her Campaign to Help Kids and Families | Eastern North Carolina Now

    On a beautiful sunny afternoon in the nation's capital, 16 months into her role as America's first lady, Melania Trump unveiled her "Be Best" initiative for children and families, a comprehensive program focused on three main points: well-being, fighting opioid abuse, and positivity on social media.

    The campaign is the culmination of the past several months of the first lady's public events, all of which centered on helping the nation's children and families.

    "As a mother and as first lady, it concerns me that in today's fast-paced and ever-connected world, children can be less prepared to express or manage their emotions and oftentimes turn to forms of destructive or addictive behavior such as bullying, drug addiction, or even suicide," she said during the Rose Garden event at which she announced the initiative Monday afternoon.

    "I feel strongly that as adults we can and should be best at educating our children about the importance of a healthy and balanced life," the first lady said. She called it "an awareness campaign, dedicated to the most valuable and fragile among us - our children."

    Melania Trump asked for each citizen's help in caring for all kids - our most precious resource.

    "I'm asking all of you to join me in providing support and guidance to our children, so that we can make a real difference," she said. "How we raise and educate our children on a variety of topics will provide the blueprint for the next generation. Together, let's encourage children to think big, and do their best, to be best, in everything they do."

    She ended her brief remarks with, "God bless you, our families, our children, and God bless the United States of America."

    President Donald Trump then took the podium, and - no surprise, of course - had glowing words for America's first lady.

    "That was truly a beautiful and heartfelt speech. That's the way she feels - very strongly," he said. "America is truly blessed to have a first lady who is so devoted to our country and to our children. Over the past 15 months, Melania has visited hospitals, schools, and families who have suffered from the opioid crisis, and suffered very deeply."

    "Everywhere she has gone," Trump continued, "Americans have been touched by her sincerity, moved by her grace, and lifted by her love. Melania, your care and compassion for our nation's children - I have to say this, and I say it all the time - inspires us all. Today, we pledge to be best - best for our families, best for our communities, and best for our nation."

    President Trump then signed a proclamation designating May 7 as "Be Best Day," joking, "And I think you all know who's going to get the pen."

    A visit to the official "Be Best" website revealed what the campaign seeks to do. It will "champion the many successful well-being programs that provide children with the tools and skills required for emotional, social, and physical health," according to the website.

    How will this be accomplished? Through publicly encouraging time-honored qualities in each adult. "By promoting values such as healthy living, encouragement, kindness, and respect, parents, teachers, and other adults can help prepare children for their futures. With those values as a solid foundation, children will be able to better deal with the evils of the opioid crisis and avoid negative social media interaction," the homepage noted.

    Melania Trump has in recent weeks experienced a significant surge in support, a new CNN poll revealed Monday.

    In the poll SSRS conducted last week, 57 percent of respondents said they have a favorable impression of Mrs. Trump, up from 47 percent in January. This is the highest number Melania Trump has received in any CNN polling, according to multiple outlets.
