Publihser's note: These answers by NC Senate, District 1, Senate Candidate Bill Cook to questions by Reggie Ponder of the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, NC were sent to me3 as a press release from the candidate himself.

Press Release:

Daily Advance: Do you support Amendment One? If the May 8 vote on the amendment is not consistent with your position, would you work to reverse that outcome or accept the decision as the will of the people?

Bill Cook: Yes. I support the Marriage Amendment. Marriage between a man and a woman has existed in virtually every known society. It has served the purpose of channeling procreative sexual activity into an institution which will provide a stable environment for children produced from the sexual union of the partners in marriage. If the May 8th vote does not agree with my position I will accept the will of the people of North Carolina. However, I will continue to try to change the voter's position. I will continue to try to change the voter's position.

Daily Advance: Do you support Gov. Beverly Perdue's plan to reinstate a three-quarter-cent sales tax to help with education funding? If not, do you support other additional revenues for education? Should education funding remain where it is now?

Bill Cook: Throwing money at education is not the answer to poor education results in North Carolina. I believe we should institute a system to identify good teachers and pay them well with the money we save by eliminating much of the state education bureaucracy. We should encourage more charter schools, home schools and private schools and allow them to engage in completion which will drive the quality of education ever higher. More local parental involvement equals high standards.

Daily Advance: What should be done to support job creation in northeastern North Carolina?

Bill Cook: Job creation in northeastern North Carolina is a function of business growth. Lower taxes and regulation nurture business growth, particularly small business which produces 70% of the jobs. A lower tax puts more money in the hands of consumers while letting businesses keep more of what they earn. Thus they can hire more workers. Less regulation accomplishes the same result by reducing unnecessary business spending. Our natural resources should be used to promote our economy, not some esoteric snail.
