Publisher's note: Please forgive the lateness of this press release, so diligently sent to us at BCN by Representative Bill Cook, but due to be without power for about 22 hours because of the most inclement of weather, we are post this information rather untimely after the veto override, by Governor Perdue, has already occurred and been reported on by us.

We will; however, continue to post these noteworthy informational reports as an archived history of this historic "short session," now finished, of the 2012 General Assembly.

For Immediate Release:

Raleigh     North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis and Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, House Majority Leader, released the following statements today after the North Carolina House of Representatives voted to override Gov. Bev Perdue's veto of Senate Bill 416, which modifies the procedures for the death penalty. It was the ninth time since January of 2011 that a bipartisan majority in the House has voted to override a veto from Gov. Perdue. The veto was overridden earlier today in the Senate, and the bill will now become law over the objections of the Governor.

"This bill has enjoyed broad support from within the law enforcement community and the criminal justice system. This bill ensures that the families of victims - not convicted murderers - will be shielded from the pain that would accompany an evasion of justice that could occur if this bill did not become law. I am proud of the bipartisan majority in the North Carolina House whose bold action today will ensure that justice is not denied for victims and their families." - Speaker Thom Tillis

"Under current law, a de facto moratorium has negated the deterrent effects of the death penalty. With today's override of the Governor's veto, the end of the moratorium is in sight. The basic principle of justice is restored: individual responsibility." - Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam
