BCCC announces schedule of Career and College Readiness Classes | Eastern NC Now

    The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College this week announced a schedule of four upcoming classes that will help students obtain their high school equivalency and acquire new job skills or obtain a college degree faster than ever before.

   The schedule of classes, offered at different times and locations in 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, one class in Room 813 and a second class in Room 816 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus; 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, N.C. Highway 33, Chocowinity; 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, JobLink, 1385 John Small Ave., Washington.

    There is no fee to attend these classes. Students in the program will commit to a nine-week intensive course of instruction involving all academic areas. They will also learn test-taking skills and participate in career and college preparation and exploration. Students in the class will set their own deadlines to take the GED exam as determined by student and teacher based on academic needs, study habits, career and/or college goals, and any other information which may affect achievement and outcomes.

    "In order to better meet the needs of adult learners in our community, the Basic Skills Department is undergoing changes in classes, teaching methods, subject matter and content, attendance policies, and enrollment practices," according to Laurie Weston, Basic Skills coordinator at BCCC.

    "The classes are designed to put students on a fast track to achieving their General Educational Development, or GED, and prepare them to enter a career pathway or college program of study," according to Laurie Weston, Basic Skills coordinator at BCCC.

    "More innovative, active involvement teaching strategies that incorporate hands-on learning, field trips, projects and other real-life activities will be used in these classes,* she said.

    The minimum requirements for the course include completing an enrollment process which involves taking the Test of Adult Basic Education placement test, setting personal academic and career goals, attending an orientation/counseling session, and filling out registration and enrollment forms. Students must be 18 years old or older, although 16 and 17 year-old students may qualify with parental permission. Students will not be allowed to miss more than six total hours of class over the course of the program. Those not meeting the attendance requirements may transfer to a traditional Basic Skills class or drop-in study classroom.

    Space is limited in the Career and College Readiness Class and enrollment will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional Career and College Readiness classes will be offered this
Fall and in the Spring and Summer of 2013.
