Rawls appointed to BCCC Board of Trustees | Eastern North Carolina Now

    James Cotton Rawls, a resident of Bayside Shores in Washington, has been appointed to the Beaufort County Community College Board of Trustees by Gov. Bev Perdue.

    Rawls took the oath of office at the Tuesday, Oct. 2, meeting of the BCCC board and will serve a four-year term on the board.

    "The BCCC Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome Mr. Rawls as one of its members," said board chairman Russell Smith. "With his experience as a community college student and a county leader, Mr. Rawls will bring valuable insight to the board."

    A native of Robersonville, Rawls serves as Area Equipment Superintendent for the N.C. Department of Transportation. Rawls has extensive experience in area business and industry having worked for Harrington Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Lewiston-Woodville, a maker of farm equipment, as well as Perdue Inc. Poultry Farm, also in Lewiston-Woodville.

    Rawls also has experience working for state government. In 1992, prior to his employment with DOT, Rawls worked as an inspector for the N.C. Department of Labor by then-Labor Commissioner John Brooks. Rawls earned certification as a safety inspector while with the agency.

    Rawls was elected as a Martin County commissioner in 1990 and served several years on the county board before moving to Beaufort County from Hamilton about eight years ago.

    Rawls is a 1971 graduate of Robersonville High School and attended Martin County Community College and East Carolina University.

    He is a volunteer with the American Cancer Society*s Relay for Life and an active member of the First Baptist Church in Washington.

    Rawls and his wife, Elise, a retired teacher, have one daughter and two grandchildren.
