Conservatives responded to the news on Wednesday that Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is reportedly set to retire from the nation's highest court, with many suggesting that the retirement was motivated by projections that Democrats are going to be decimated in the upcoming midterms elections.

Multiple news organizations reported on Wednesday that sources close to Breyer had said that he was going to retire - and that Democrat President Joe Biden was expected to make an official announcement about the matter this week.

"Breyer, 83, the oldest member of the court, was appointed in 1994 by President Bill Clinton," The New York Times reported. "After the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2020 and the appointment of Justice Amy Coney Barrett by President Donald J. Trump, he became the subject of an energetic campaign by liberals who wanted him to step down to ensure that Mr. Biden could name his successor while Democrats control the Senate."

"The Democrats know they will lose the Senate majority in 2022," Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), said in a statement. "I predict that Chuck Schumer and whoever is running the White House will force all Democrats to obey and walk the plank in support of a radical liberal with extremist views."

"Justice Breyer can read tea leaves," The Daily Wire's Ben Shapiro wrote on Twitter. "And he knows November will be a wipeout for the Democrats, so he's getting out while the getting is good."

Jesse Hunt, communications director for the Republican Governors Association (RGA), wrote on Twitter that the retirement was a "Good indication of how Democrats feel about holding the Senate in 2022."

"Multiple sources tell me Justice Breyer was not planning to announce his retirement today," Fox News' Shannon Bream, wrote on Twitter. "They describe him as 'upset' with how this has played out."

"The least surprising thing ever is the retirement of Breyer," conservative columnist Kurt Schlichter tweeted. "If you need proof that the Dems think the GOP wins the Senate in November, there you are."

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) responded to the news by saying, "If all Democrats hang together - which I expect they will - they have the power to replace Justice Breyer in 2022 without one Republican vote in support."

"Elections have consequences, and that is most evident when it comes to fulfilling vacancies on the Supreme Court," Graham added.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did not have any immediate remarks to make on the alleged retirement.
