   Notable Activity

The General Assembly did not meet to take public votes this week. Although not technically in adjournment, the legislature is not expected to take up votes until after litigation concerning the constitutionality of recently redrawn congressional and state legislative maps is settled. The North Carolina Supreme Court heard oral arguments in that case this week and is expected to make its ruling quickly. If the Court rules against the legislature and overturns the new maps, legislators will need to work quickly to draw new maps in time for the 2022 primary scheduled for May 17, 2022. The State Board of Elections has said it needs final maps by February 18 to keep the May primary on schedule. Recently, the General Assembly passed legislation to push the primary back to June 7, 2022 by passing HB 605. However, that legislation was vetoed by the Governor late last week.

Interim committees continued to meet this week with Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Catherine Truitt testifying to the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations (Gov Ops) Subcommittee on Federal COVID-19 Funds regarding learning loss and other education issues during the pandemic. Gov Ops and other study committees are scheduled for the remainder of this winter. NCACC will continue to monitor these meetings, and other interim committees, and report on any happenings of interest to or impacting counties.
