BCCC Briefs: Summer Youth Programs | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, N.C.     This summer, Beaufort County Community College will offer 34 classes through its Summer Youth Enrichment Program across Beaufort, Hyde, and Washington Counties. In Washington County, the college is partnering with Washington County Schools to offer these programs for their students. Parents who are interested in having their Washington County Middle School students enrolled in these programs are advised to call Tamara Wrightson, Director of Career and Technical Education, at 252-793-5171. For Beaufort and Hyde Counties, guardians and parents can contact the Division of Continuing Education by calling 252-940-6375 or email continuingeducation@beaufortccc.edu to register. Transportation for Hyde youth can be arranged through Hyde County Transit by calling 252-926-1637. Scholarships are available for qualifying households.

    Hunter Safety

    This free class is offered for youth 12+ years old. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Officer Trent Parrish will help young hunters learn to be safe and responsible. During the day Officer Parrish will explain firearm safety, hunting ethics, conservation and wildlife management, wildlife identification, survival and first aid, specialty hunting, and tree stand safety. Completers will be eligible to purchase their first hunting license. Lunch hour is 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students are welcome to bring their favorite grown-up to participate also. While this class is free, registration is required. This program takes place from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20.

    Boater Safety

    This free class is offered for youth 12+ years old. Officer Trent Parrish of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission returns to guide young boaters to safe and sound operation of watercraft. Students will take to the water knowing basic boating safety, equipment, rules of the road, weather, and good boating etiquette. The Boating Guide for North Carolina will be Officer Parrish's text, and completers will have satisfied the safety training requirement for boaters younger than 26. Lunch is 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students are welcome to bring their favorite grown-up to participate. This program is free, but registration is required. This class takes place 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Monday, June 27.

    Drone Camp

    Rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders can learn to fly a drone through this class. They will be issued a drone kit and learn about the parts of a drone and how to safely handle it. They will learn about aviation history, and how hot air balloons, fixed wing airplanes, and drones fly. Finally, they will fly a drone using a smartphone as the remote controller and learn how to code the drone to fly by itself. The class will spend four days on BCCC's campus, use the auditorium for drone flying inside, and, weather permitting, also fly outside. On Friday the class will visit Inner Banks STEM Center in Washington, N.C. They will experience flying both a Desktop Flight Training Device and a full motion airplane flight simulator. This $100 program is made possible by the Inner Banks Stem Center, and it will take place from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 27-30 and from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1. Drone Camp is also offered in Hyde and Washington Counties.

    Baby Sitting (offered in Washington County)

    Sharon Cherry, leader of WCS's Early Childhood Education Program, will share important basics for baby sitters for youth who are ready for the responsibility of caring for young children. Students will learn aspects of care giving, safety concerns, communication with children and parents, activity ideas, household and food management, and even some business basics. Participants will feel confident caring for young children after this experience. This program will take place from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday from July 25-28 at Washington County Middle School. Baby Sitting is offered also in Beaufort and Hyde Counties.

    It's Your Money! (offered in Hyde County)

    This program is for rising sixth graders and up who will eventually working part-time as a high school student or full time as a graduate. Learning to manage money is important, so students can join this class to learn how to budget, how to not overextend financially, and how to keep some of their hard-earned pay. After this class, they will feel better prepared to enter the world of work. This $70 class takes place from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. from Monday-Thursday, July 18-21 $70 at the Hyde County Davis Center. It's Your Money is also offered in Beaufort and Washington Counties.
