Beware of the U. N. | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: Jim Bispo's weekly column appears in the Beaufort Observer.

Watch out!! Here comes the UN. After "observing" our election, perhaps they will be able to report how many folks were deprived of their right to vote for lack of a photo ID. Or perhaps they will be able to determine how many voters are handed multiple ballots. Maybe they will be able to tell us how many voters didn't seem to have any idea what they were voting for - or whom. It doesn't seem likely that they will be keeping track of how many folks are turned away because they have already voted, either during "early voting" or earlier in the day. Or will they??

What do you suppose they would do it they encountered the "New Black Panthers" outside a polling place threatening voters as happened in the 2008 election?? Short answer: Not much. I suppose if we wanted someone who really knew what to look for, someone with a lot of experience observing elections, we should probably have asked Jimmy Carter. He's done a lot of that kind of stuff. If we could only break him away from building houses, he could probably help to ensure an honest election. As it is, we hear that the Dems (especially) sent a whole lot of lawyers out to certain select precincts to observe (and presumably ensure an honest election). Considering that, it may have been a good idea to have UN observers or Jimmy Carter watching over our electoral process in action. Hmmm...

Actually, we can only wonder about the wisdom of allowing UN Election Watchers anywhere near our polling places. It is bad enough having them on Sixth Avenue in NYC (or is Avenue of the Americas??). Why would anyone with any sense allow them to go any further than the UN building for any reason even vaguely resembling something official?? Unless, of course you believe the NAACP's sophistry about disenfranchising blacks (mostly). Give me a break!!

The bad thing about giving the UN increased influence goes well beyond aiding and abetting the NAACP in support of the allegations of the disenfranchisement of minorities and old folks who seemingly don't have the intellect to get a photo ID (even when they are free). Food stamps, extended unemployment benefits and the like, folks seem to be able to handle; photo IDs not so much. Hmmm... Back to the UN

The UN wants to regulate the internet. Aided and abetted by Eric Holder and his merry band of whatever they are, they want to "control" (read ban) gun ownership by individuals (excepting, of course, those guns that are allowed to cross the border where they can be put to "good use" by the drug cartels). The UN wants to tax securities sales. They want to tax offshore energy production. They want to redistribute the world's wealth to the third world. (Guess who has the majority of votes outside the 15 members of the Security Council). the UN wants to impose carbon taxes in the name of global warming even though the notion of "global warming" has been thoroughly discredited. They want to collect royalties on sea bed mining. The US is among a small group of nations which have neither signed nor ratified the UN conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). According to Wikipedia, the US has taken no action reportedly because of opposition to Part XI of the Convention which establishes an International Seabed Authority (ISA) to authorize seabed exploration and mining and collect and distribute the seabed mining royalty. That issue is not dead. Nor are any of the other "issues" mentioned above. If there is one thing we can say about the UN, it is that they don't give up easily. At least when it's something involving "playing office" or figuring how to get their hands deeper into other folks pockets. Of course let's face it, figuring out ways to take over other folks wealth is surely easier than working for and earning your own.

The US picks up 22% of the UN tab. The second greatest "contributor" to the UN is Japan at 12.52%. As a matter of interest, our benefactor (China) from whom we borrow about half of the money we ante up for the UN, pays a paltry 3.189%. The Russians pay a princely share of 1.06%. What's wrong with that picture??

The UN calls itself the globe's peace maker as well as peacekeeper. The blue helmeted UN troops are the world's peace keepers alright. They are the peace keepers until the shooting starts; and then, as if by magic, they are gone, leaving the heavy lifting to others.

Our good friends and benefactors (read bankers) the Chinese and our increasingly obstreperous. Russian friends (??) balk at virtually every proposals presented by the US and designed to keep global peace. They seem to offer only vetoes. Never a counter proposal; only vetoes. As long as they are not faced with anything more dangerous than a paper tiger, their behavior is not likely to improve. Disagreements between people and disagreements between nations are to be expected. But disagreeing with every proposal would seem to suggest something more serious than a simple disagreement. How about an irreconcilable philosophical disagreement. In California, I am told, that is grounds for divorce - something to think about..

The UN would seem to have largely outlived it's lofty purposes. The UN was initially established to help power (i.e. row) the ship of world peace. The problem is that, as with most bureaucracies, as they grow they find more and more things that they "should" be doing. Not only have they long since lost interest in rowing; they want to steer.

And there are a lot of folks in the world who are willing to give them whatever it is they want, including, I believe, many in high places in the current administration. Instead of continuing to bankroll this merry band of thieves, we need to pull out of the UN and be done with them. We do not need to be handing over control of our government to the UN or anyone else for that matter. It's bad enough having a Messiah who seems to believe he can take charge of our entire government through the issuance of Executive Orders.. We do not need third world countries (or anyone else) helping us along in that direction.

    D'ya think??
