Vidant Medical Center announces new board members, officers | Eastern North Carolina Now

    GREENVILLE, NC     Members of the board of directors of Vidant Medical Center announced new members and officers at a meeting today.

    “Our board is fortunate to have a broad slate of proven leaders to call upon to provide strong leadership during this critical time in health care," said Dr. David Herman, president and CEO, Vidant Health.

    The new members to this board are Dr. Shirley Carraway and Polly Johnson. Shirley is a retired educator and former director of special projects at East Carolina University. She served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction with Pitt County Schools and as superintendent of Orange County Schools in Hillsborough, NC.

    Polly currently serves as president and CEO of the NC Foundation for Nursing Excellence. She previously served as executive director of the North Carolina Board of Nursing, as well as worked with the North Carolina Association for Home Care. She also worked as a nurse and clinical coordinator at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.

    Officers include: Dr. Walter Pofahl, chair; JoAnne Burgdorff, vice-chair; David Harris, treasurer; Bruce Austin, assistant treasurer; Bruce Gray, secretary. Other members include: Dr. Marcus Albernaz; Noel Baucom; Robert Greczyn Jr.; Ralph Hall Jr.; William Jones Jr.; Art Keeney; Thomasine Kennedy; Bryant Kittrell; Melvin McLawhorn; Dr. Mary Raab; Ray Rogers; Bynum Satterwhite; and David Womack.

    Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as a tertiary care, teaching hospital with 909 licensed and CON-approved beds. Only 1.3 percent of hospitals in the United States have more than 800 beds; fewer than 1 percent of these are teaching hospitals. The medical center is home to the only Level 1 trauma center east of the Raleigh area.

    In 2012, Vidant Medical Center admitted nearly 47,000 patients. It is ranked as the number one academic medical center for patient centeredness in the 2012 UHC database. The medical center is home to more than 350 residents and fellows and more than 1,000 students each day.
