NCDHHS Division of Public Health Achieves National Accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board | Eastern North Carolina Now

Press Release:

RALEIGH     The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Public Health is proud to announce its accreditation from the prestigious Public Health Accreditation Board. This achievement recognizes DPH's commitment to meeting the highest standards of public health practice and demonstrates its dedication to improving the health and well-being of the residents of North Carolina. This recognition enhances the department's ability to attract funding, partnerships and resources to support public health initiatives and improve health outcomes across the state.

Accreditation by the PHAB is a rigorous process that evaluates an organization's ability to meet a set of quality standards, measuring the division's performance against nationally recognized public health standards. The accreditation process examines various aspects of DPH operations, including the effectiveness of its programs and its capacity to respond to public health emergencies. The PHAB also noted key strengths including the division's strong commitment to continuous quality improvement and strong engagement with local health departments.

"We are thrilled to receive accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board," said Mark Benton, Deputy Secretary for Health. "This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and partners who strive to protect and promote the health of all North Carolinians. Accreditation reinforces our commitment to excellence and ensures our programs and services meet the highest standards."

Accreditation by the PHAB is built on evidence-based standards that allow health departments to demonstrate performance and accountability to communities, policymakers and other stakeholders.

"We were fortunate to receive new temporary resources during the COVID-19 pandemic which helped fill gaps and build infrastructure in core areas required for national accreditation," said Dr. Susan Kansagra, Assistant Secretary for Public Health. "There remains a critical need for longer-term national investment in public health infrastructure to ensure we are prepared to meet the health challenges of the future."

By achieving accreditation, the NCDHHS Division of Public Health joins a select group of state and local health departments across the country that have earned this distinction. This accomplishment underscores the department's dedication to advancing the health and well-being of North Carolina's diverse population.

Accreditation from the PHAB provides a strong foundation for NCDHHS's ongoing efforts to improve health outcomes, reduce health disparities and build a healthier North Carolina.
