Actress Sandra Bullock put her Hollywood career on hold to care for her longtime boyfriend, Bryan Randall, after he was diagnosed with a debilitating terminal disease.

Randall died on August 5 after privately battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) - better known as Lou Gehrig's disease - for the past three years, and Page Six noted on Tuesday that the "Speed" star had all but disappeared for the last year following the release of her 2022 film "The Lost City."

"I want to be at home. I'm not doing anyone any favors who's investing in a project if I'm saying, 'I just want to be at home,'" she told "CBS Sunday Morning" while promoting the film. "'Cause I was always running, I was always running to the next thing. I just want to be present and responsible for one thing."

"I don't know what 'a while' is. I don't know what that is,'" she added.

Since then, Bullock has only been spotted in public a few times - and reportedly shared the heartbreaking reason for her sudden absence with a close-knit handful of friends.

"I don't think people knew that Sandra actually took off to care for Bryan," a producer told Page Six of her break from the spotlight. "I'm gutted for her."

Randall's family released a statement sharing the news on Tuesday, saying, "It is with great sadness that we share that on August 5th Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a 3 year battle with ALS. Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request. We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours. At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan."

Bullock met Randall - a photographer - when he took photos at her adopted son's birthday party in 2015, and although they never married, she called him "the love of my life." He was 57 years old.
