Press Release:

RALEIGH     The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will host a live Spanish-language Cafecito and tele-town hall on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 7 p.m., to discuss how to support and improve heart health as well as prevent and manage heart disease.

    Event participants include:

  • Yazmin Garcia Rico, MSW, Director of Latinx and Hispanic Policy and Strategy, NCDHHS
  • Alejandra Bustillo, M.D., Internal Medicine Physician, LliBott Consultorios Medicos
  • Liliana Marin, Community Impact Director, American Heart Association

Many North Carolinians are impacted by heart conditions - nearly one in 10 adults have a history of heart disease, heart attack or stroke. Among the Hispanic community across the U.S., 52% of men and nearly 43% of women have heart disease. Additionally, one in two Hispanic adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease or stroke.

Cafecito and tele-town hall panelists will discuss the following:

  • Ways to support and improve heart health
  • Heart disease prevention, detection and management
  • How to access health care services, guidance and providers
  • Where to find heart health resources and support in Spanish

Many people were unable to attend regular checkups or screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to navigate challenges as they access health services, including those who do not have health insurance or know where to find information in the language they understand best. Resources are available across the state to connect communities with health care providers, education and support to improve heart health and help loved ones do the same.
