Governor McCrory Suspends Vehicle Restrictions to Aid Power Restoration | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, NC     Governor Pat McCrory signed Executive Order 15 today to temporarily waive vehicle size and weight restrictions so utility and repair crews can more easily maneuver throughout the state to restore power from Thursday's storm. Duke Energy has requested additional utility crews from the Midwest and South Carolina to help restore service to the more than 243,000 customers who still have no power.

    Governor McCrory thanked first responders, law enforcement and local emergency management crews for their quick response to the severe storms that swept through the state yesterday. Three people were killed in the storm that damaged scores of homes, knocked out power to more than 350,000 residents and toppled countless trees across the state.

    "My condolences go out to the families and friends of the three people that lost their lives as a result of the storm," said Governor McCrory. "I also want to commend the first responders, law enforcement and emergency management for their swift response."

    More than two dozen counties reported to some type of damage during yesterday's storm. Downed trees and power lines blocked roads. County emergency management officials continue to survey the extent of damages to determine total impacts. Once they complete their appraisals, North Carolina Emergency Management officials can compile the damage estimates to see which areas, if any, qualify for state financial assistance.
