Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C. - The State Board of Elections on Tuesday unanimously certified the 2024 Republican second primary in North Carolina.

The second primary, held May 14, included statewide contests for the Republican nominations for lieutenant governor and state auditor. It also included a Republican second primary in U.S. House District 13. The winners of those contests are now the Republican nominees on the November 5 general election ballot.

The state certification came after the 100 county boards of elections certified results at the county level last month and after post-election audits conducted in the past couple weeks verified the counts.

See the executive director's 2024 Second Primary Election Canvass & Certification Report (PDF).

More than 133,700 voters cast ballots in the second primary, a turnout of about 2.8% of eligible, registered voters.

"We appreciate the voters who turned out for the second primary and the election officials and poll workers across North Carolina who helped make it a success," said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections. "We are now focused squarely on the presidential election in November to ensure an accessible, safe, secure, and fair election for the state's 7.4 million voters."

    Post-election Audits and Recounts

After every election, elections officials conduct a series of audits and, when necessary, recounts, to confirm the election results.

Findings of post-election audits are detailed in the Post-Election Audit Report for the Second Primary Election on May 14, 2024 (PDF).

Put simply, the audits confirmed that results tabulated by machine are accurate and that there is no evidence of fraud or other irregularities that could have affected outcomes in the primary.

    County Board Appointments

In other business, the State Board appointed Larry Burdette Beatty as a Republican member of the Pasquotank County Board of Elections.
