The $5 Billion loophole - How foreign interests influence American politics by the back door | Eastern NC Now

America under foreign threat

ENCNow

United States law and the law of most, if not all US states, prohibits foreign contributions to US politics campaigns, but that does not stop workarounds where foreign money influences our elections.  Some of it is fairly blatant, like the corrupt Democrat internet fundraising organization ActBlue knowingly accepting Visa gift cards purchased overseas for direct campaign contributions.

Then there are the schemes to fund activist organizations rather than actual candidates, another way to influence politics and elections.  There is currently an ongoing criminal investigation of billionaire Neville Singham, a US citizen who has long resided in China and is a supporter of China's communist government.  Singham has built a network of activist organizations in the US that push a socialist, pro-Chinese, and anti-ICE agenda.  There is a very real question of whether the money he feeds into that network is his money of that of his Chinese government allies.

This has gone on for some time with other groups.  Years ago, Republicans in Congress were able to trace Russian government funds being fed to a foundation they controlled on the island of Bermuda, and then from that foundation to various US environmentalist groups.  A major energy exporter, Russia was funding the environmentalists to try to hamstring US competition in the energy sector.

Now, a comprehensive article on the loophole that allows foreign money to influence US politics sums up the problem we face.  It is a $5 Billion problem that needs to be fixed.
