A reason to be concerned about our school curriculum going forward in Beaufort County? | Eastern NC Now

two ex-teachers could swing board to the left and they are both running as "Republicans"

ENCNow

Among candidates appearing before the Beaufort County Republican Executive Committee were two ex-teachers who are nominees for the school board.  The brief statement of one, seemingly supported by the other, gives reason for concern about how they will handle curriculum on the school board.

Jennifer Cornelius, running unopposed in District 8, stated she would not get involved in politics on the school board "because it is about the children".   How many times from Jim Hunt forward have we heard Democrat politicians spout those words "for the children" or "about the children"?

Even after being there as a teacher, does Mrs. Cornelius not comprehend all the political bias already in our schools and particularly the curriculum?  It comes from lots of sources, the leftwing teachers unions, liberal textbook companies, and a politically appointed heavily liberal state board of education.  Some states like Florida and Texas have worked particularly hard to get the leftward bias out of their curriculum.

After Covid, when home based instruction showed parents what was being taught to their children, there has been a mass movement of parents across the country to get leftwing politics out of the curriculum.  Here in Beaufort County, when a committee of teachers proposed a social studies curriculum full of leftwing political bias, there was a standing room only crowd at the school board meeting objecting to it.

Even so, since then the school board has adopted curricula tainted with leftwing politics.  The Bridges math curriculum is laced with DEI.  It is also Bill Gates' Common Core Math, which is controversial among parents for dumbing down students.  The new science curriculum at the high school level openly indoctrinates on the highly politicized CO2 climate theory.  Fortunately, on the latter the school board has at least provided supplemental materials so students can hear both sides.

School board members are supposed to represent parents and citizens.  Concern by parents about the politics already embedded in our educational system is shown in the polling.  When a major French polling firm did an international poll, looking at 20 countries on all continents asking parents their greatest concerns about their schools, American parents put "political and ideological bias in the classroom" as their top concern, the only country in the world to do so.  Here in North Carolina a Civitas poll found that 71% of North Carolina parents are concerned about "political indoctrination in the classroom".

So, although we can be proud of Charles Hickman in District 2 on the school board, and at least satisfied with Terry Williams in District 4, do we have to hold out nose for the two ex-teachers in Districts 6 and 8?  We need school board members who are part of the solution, not part of the problem.  Someone who says they want to stay away from politics is not going to do anything to counter the leftwing politics already embedded in our schools.  We have an ongoing problem that needs to be fixed.

Voting for school board this year is a challenge for conservatives. South of the river, it is fine, Charles Hickman is a solid conservative, and Terry Williams is a swing voter. North of the river is a different story, where liberals captured both GOP nominations.

In the 6th district, there is Monica Davis, a liberal Republican facing a liberal Democrat. Somr conservatives may say that at least Davis wears the GOP brand, and vote for her in spite of her liberalism. Some conservatives may see the Democrat as the lesser of the evils as she at least is not part of that Carolyn Walker clique. Some may look at both as just very unappealing, and not vote in the race. In the 8th district only Cornelius is on the ballot, so she is going to win. To protest, conservative can just not vote in that race, but they can also write in, perhaps for the previous conservaitve Donald Shreve.

Van Zant, you are absolutely correct. Carolyn and Randy Walker were all over the place on primary election day at Chocowinity Fire Station badmouthing conservatives Charles Hickman and Steven Rader, while promoting liberals Austin Garrison and Monica Davis. I worked for a different candidate there and observed it all. Two precincts vote at Chocowinity Fire Station, Gilead and Chocowinity, which include significant parts of both Hickman and Rader's districts. There is little doubt that the Walkers are anti-conservative.

If I lived in the Rader district, I would really be wondering whether there is any significant difference between Monica Davis and her Democrat opponent. If I lived in the Walker district, I would be looking around for an alternative when she comes up again.

Both Carolyn Walker and her husband Randy were actively opposing conservative Republican School Board candidates in the last primary. Their fingerprints are all over the progression of the School Board becoming more and more liberal. Their work resulted in liberals winning two of the three seats they targeted. Pretend Republicans Carolyn and Randy are the Democrat Party's best weapons in Beaufort County.

On primary election night both Walkers were at the Board of Elections crowing about their wins and badmouthing the conservatives that lost as well as the conservatives that won. Part of their public display was a phone call they were carrying on with the former School Superintendent while at the Election Board.

Monica Davis and Jennifer Cornelius were two of the three liberals supported in the primary by the main liberal power on the school board, Carolyn Walker. The other was Austin Garrison. Two out of three won, expanding Walker's liberal clique. Those two, both from the teacher clique took seats from pro-parent conservatives. To get a decent school board back, conservatives have a lot of work ahead in 2028.

Carolyn Walker and Monica Davis were Democrats most of their lives until shortly before they decided to run for the school board. The leopard does not change its spots. Both are still functionally Democrats. Don't know if the same may be true on Cornelius. She certainly does not sound like a conservative or a Republican.

Beaufort County lost two good school board members in Don Schreve and Steven Rader, both solid no-nonsense Republicans.

There seems to be a struggle in Beaufort County over school board seats between teachers on one side and parents on the other. On election day at my polling place, I found 4 or 5 teachers playing hookey from their jobs campaigning for ex-teacher Monica Davis. I am told that similar groups of teachers were present in other polling places in that district. They were all working to try to replace the most vocal supporter of parents right, Steven Rader, with a teacher.

One wonders if they told school administrators that the reason they were abandoning their classrooms that day was to play politics against a sitting member of the school board? Or did they give false reasons. If the former it raises questions about the school administration. If the latter, it raises the question of whether any action has been taken over false reasons for a day off.

Regardless, the 6th district primary was a battle between teachers and parents. Parents lost. The winner has been a longtime Democrat.

If it is important to improve education in Beaufort County, it will be very important to have an active Beaufort County Board of Commissioners, and you just will not get that with an expanded Center-Left /Left Coalition.

Washington NC could be the bedroom community for Greenville NC if we had a better School system. That will happen if we can elect people on our School Board that know something about MANAGEMENT. The last report that I heard was that one half of our schools are half empty. We just built a mega school for one thousand students K through third grade at the busiest intersection in town. It should have been two schools strategically located. 30 percent of our students in Beaufort County are at standard reading level. We had to fight hard to get rid of CRT because our teachers had been indoctrinated and the school board was telling the public that the state set the curriculum. We finally exposed that lie. The School Board sets the curriculum. The State has some requirements and end of grade testing. Now the State Board of Education has lowered the letter grade, so that "D" is now 40. "Hey Dad, I passed. I made a D." We need MANAGERS on or School Board.

What do you really expect from putting ex-teachers on the school board. They are going to be mouthpieces for the teachers as a special interest and think they "know better" than parents. This is actually the very worst background I can imagine for a school board member. They will be rubber stamps for the teachers unions and the education establishment, and won't give two cents for the opinions of parents.
