When will it stop? My weather person advises that the northwest and northeast are in for a winter storm with extremely low temperatures and snow and ice. Apparently, it is coming in from Siberia over the artic. Something has to be done about those 'Ruskies'. First, they interfere with our elections and now they are interfering with out weather.

I'm getting some private push back from this article, so perhaps some clarification is in order. I am not giving the Russians a pass on this. note quote.
"I am in favor of a full investigation into the hacking and if we can find out who and how it was done, there should be grave consequences both for individuals and countries that participated in the hacking. "

What I am saying is essentially that this issue is being used to attempt to delegitimize the election results. The people voted per the procedure set up in the constitution and the electoral college have or soon will chose Trump as the winner based on the law in effect. Regardless if certain voters were uninformed, ill informed or just plain duped about what they believed is beyond the point. The votes were counted per the current laws and a decision was rendered by the public. It may not be in the constitution but I think we have the privileged if not the right to be ignorant or wrong about our beliefs. The law does not guarantee a perfect election, it guarantees a fair election and that should be investigated. If we discounted vote based on errors of judgement, we would never have had several of the Presidents we had on both sides of the spectrum. NO EXTRA CREDIT GIVEN FOR THIS LESSON.

Commented on Remembering Wyatt

Interestingly enough, as a non movie goer in theaters (30 years perhaps with only one exception with daughter to see Jersey Boys) I use Wyatt's reviews to determine what to rent or watch on Netflix or Redbox. His insight into the craft without spoiling the movie allowed me to determine if I would have interest in watching the movie. I am sorry to hear of his passing and hope that his soul has found peace from the PTSD that eats away over the years. One thing I do know, is that it took some Big Brass Ba!!$ (Triple B's) to fly those damn Spads low on ground support.

Brenda lived a few doors down from my cousin in Nashville and lived a somewhat normal life when not performing. I never met her to my knowledge but have a few friends who did know her relatives. What a small world.

Thanks for this definitive story of a man of America who accomplished much with humility, determination and a willingness to endure great risk in pursuit of a goal. Hopefully, his life and passing will serve to illuminate the greatness that was and still is in the American Character.

Here are four 15 minute videos of John Glenn's space flight using actual video and audio. You can still feel the excitement from these 1962 clips. If you just want the condensed version watch nbr 3.

There has to be some qualification for the privilege (not right) to vote, but since we have abused the criteria in the past we are now stuck with an open format. I am a believer in voters having some skin of their own in the game.

I am always amazed that those of the Liberal persuasion say those of us who are not are narrow-minded and intolerant of diversity, and then when they get control of the power reins they resort to the very thing that they complain about in their opponents. At some point, we must all agree that the problem is not our opinions but the power we grant to those we elect to run roughshod over the minority opinion. The only change I would make to the Electoral College is to change it to the Electoral Accord because our current 'Colleges' are giving it a bad name.

I found out a long time ago that you cannot find solutions when the other side shows up with a megaphone, cameras, and a crowd. They are not looking for solutions but merely "organizing" which is a never-ending process.

One of the most enlightening articles I have read is by Charles Cook, (see link below) I guess I would be a classical liberal but I kind of like the term conservatarian.

The genius of our nation is that we can change the "direction" of our nation every two years but we can only change the foundation with deliberate and laborious procedures. That was until we started allowing the executive branch and the federal government have powers not designated to it.

Statisticians will debate the details of this election forever, but it is clear that the popular vote difference is largely due to California alone. New York was also heavily weighted in favor of Clinton.

Chalk up another one for the founding fathers wisdom.

Somewhere along the timeline, I managed to discard many of my negatives. I suspect it was when I sold the darkroom equipment and the negative box got lost in one of the moves. I have since found that one of the most serious "Stress Points" for a "Pack Rat" and "Nostalgia Nerd" is the permanent loss due to a temporary emotion. It is Sort of like a tattoo. "A permanent memory of a temporary feeling" I have none but if I did it would most likely be "Another X"

I used Oliver instead of Mel Gibson or Kenneth Branagh because he was more well know and less controversial. But really I loved the picture best.

I agree that the 'CoI' is overblown. Any person who does not act in his own interest is most likely the one who wants me to pick up his slack. In government the best cure is what the Big "O" promised, ie. Transparency. As in I have nothing to hide, and the emails I gave you prove that.

Technology is a great thing. With just one click of a button, I can change Fidel Castro from a murderous, tyrant who imprisoned his people, dissidents, and gay people into a savior of the country and a real peoples champion who provided medical care and education for the poor.

Just one click from Fox to MSNBC. What a country.

Stan,
MSNBC does provide comic relief for many but I doubt that any of its dedicated watchers feel the same about Fox.

My litmus test for an open mind:

"When was the last time you changed your opinion on a subject?"

It was the only lesson I learned from my college course in Political Science, which i might add was not at Emory.

Sabe and Stan, I think both sides tend to use the low information crowd to their best advantage. That is to be expected in politics because propaganda works. If FB and G can customize the ads they present to users based user interactions they can also customize the facts presented based on FB and G preferences.

Thomas Jefferson probably had it right when he said "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization. It expects what never was and never will be."

People who refuse to watch Fox or MSNBC are proof that the bubble is alive and well. Each is a circle unto themselves. My question is whether they is any overlap or are they just mutually exclusive.

I was just thinking about our comments on the jam session. I rarely go to concerts anymore. My daughter and I usually catch one every year or so as a father and daughter date. I am leaving shortly with her for a Dolly Pardon concert in Huntsville, Alabama.
As great as the big acts are in concerts, my best memories are always the small venues where I saw some of the best acts prior to their auditorium filling performances.

The GSEMH Facebook page tells me that Leon Russell played at the Great Southeast Music hall. I may have seen him there. Here is a link to the article I wrote about a small 500+ seat venue that seemed like a small studio. I am sure somewhere there is a place where you could share a bucket of beer with 500 close friends, but I will let the younger crowd build their memories while I continue to enjoy mine of years gone by.

Somewhere in a musical career most artist just start phoning it in. I suspect that is because the money, drugs and girls are good. Eventually they are there for the money. I have watched many musical artist sing their hit songs again as if was a medical exam. I do not think that Leon ever hit that gully, he stayed on the plateau. There is a separation between singers and singer-songwriters. Like parents, the songwriter always loves his kids. And yes, I can imagine being in the jam session watching lightning strike again.

Here is Leon in with John Mayer from The 2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Inductions. He was sixty nine years old.

Stan, it probably don't get no better than this. The perfect jam session, old coffee cups, cigarettes, a piano and microphone with a few friends sitting and standing around. I certainly helps to have a song to sing that makes everyone in the session feel like you are singing it just for them. A great talent at peace now.

Diane, this article is what only a woman could say with credibility. "The I am a big girl" paragraph is dead on. I hope this article gets wide circulation and many views. I can attest that you are correct about the difference between Pope Francis and locker room banter. I also have overheard the chit chat of women when they were unaware of the acoustic properties of rice paper (which is not actually made with rice) through a Shoji screen and they do not usually talk like Mother Theresa. I probably should have coughed or cleared my throat but I was having too much fun and a free education as well. It kinda of gives a new meaning to what is said behind closed doors.

One of the lessons of life is that people are the sum total of their life events and decisions. I have no Idea what happened to George after 1968 but at one time he faced the danger honorably. Youth has its excesses and we all have those wrong turns in life. As best I remember George was not leaving from combat but fell into the trap of what was the underground in Saigon. He certainly was not a coward and for that I felt this perspective worthy of relating as we make judgement about our current leaders and their excesses. Sum Total is the key.

I agree with both TMC and Stan. There is no doubt about the contribution of immigration to our economy and culture, but it is our responsibility as a country to provide a system that will take them out of the underground economy of off book work and provide a method of documenting and accounting that fairly and equitably matches cost vs benefit to our society.

A society that is still in constant guilt about slavery that still practices hidden servitude because it appears to be cheaper is in denial about the reality of human aspirations which we all share. We should provide a legal path of immigration with a system designed to provide opportunity for those willing to accept the bargain and also designed to remove those who interlope under the surface for nefarious reasons.

To solve the problem of the Liberals code word "Undocumented" the solution is to "Document them." The guilt lies with those who hire as much as those who are hired. We are fooling ourselves if we have sympathy for the plight of the immigrants without at the same time having some empathy for those who have to pay for the social services they consume. (Another post in the comment section, I guess I need to work on that minimalist thing more.)

Some will feel a sense of elation with the election of Donald Trump. However, I only feel a sense of frustration that our deeply divided country is split between two philosophical beliefs.

After we get past the personal fallibility of our candidates, we are left with a system of our own making. The question is now and has always been a simple fundamental philosophy of government.

Is it the government's responsibility to fix all economic and social wrongs?

Or

Is it the government's responsibility to provide a free and competitive environment with a level playing field for business and personal growth?

I guess protest were to be expected, as that seems to be the only way that a large percentage (perhaps majority) of our population reacts to the reality that not all things go their way. So much for minority rights.

How could we elect a President who did not receive the most popular votes? Once again, we see the deficiency of our educational system. About the only thing this proves to me is that the Constitution of the United States is not the law of the land unless it allows the rule of mobs, malcontents, and disadvantaged.

I had hoped I had written my last political post, but I was in error.
