Commented on The Continued PC Attack on the South!I think that one of the enduring lessons of the Civil War was simply an abomination that allowed Lincoln to garner support for his real purpose, which was as you say preserving the "arrangement". By losing the war, the South had staked its freedom on slippery ground. I agree with you that the keeping the nation united was the in the face of rebellion from the south.
As you indicate, there have been many studies that do indicate that slavery was on the wane and would have eventually been thrown on the trash heap of history. The south's cause was not helped by the fact that almost every state's succession declaration used slavery as one of its basic tenants. The aftermath of the Civil War and the carpetbaggers decent into the south to plunder is common to most wars. As you say, the victor writes the history. Somewhere lost in the history is the fundamental right for states to dissolve their relationship to the union as you have pointed out in previous posts. Our very Declaration of Independence states the case for dissolving an abusive government. I do not think any rational person could defend the practice of slavery today, but it is so intertwined with the states' rights issue that the subject is now mute. I sometimes think that we southerners have never been able to reconcile the two legs upon which the war was fought. One was the obvious inequity of slavery and the other the principle of self-determination at the local level. As always, it boils down to who is in control and those in control will use any advantage to accomplish their goals regardless of the laws on the books or the constitutional basis for those laws. The political correct movement will use every advantage to slant and obscure their real purpose. That is CONTROL. I wish you well in your conference and hope that perhaps some clarity can bring thoughtful people to the fallacy of using past sins to obscure present governmental abuse. I do not have much disagreement with your explanation of the situation and it appears that no amount of guilt will ever be forgiven to the succeeding generations who are now under assault for having been related to or born in the geography that is still under indictment by media and elitist centers in the north.

I have some experience with Fake Love. Be careful what you wish for because beauty is only skin deep but bad programming goes all the way to the source code and it can really foul up your bandwidth and destroy your broadband connection regardless of how good she looks. It can also crash your hard ..., well never mind.

Commented on TMc: Obsolete HistoryI guess we just have to assume that each new owner will rename places to a more suitable name of their time and culture. We did when we took it from the Indians, They probably did when they took it from the whomever, we named our streets and parks after our beloved Confederates and now the urban communities are renaming things to fit their history. To me names are not the important things, it is the lessons that should have been learned, but "C'est la vie" say the French. I guess I will just have to get used to Ho Chi Minh City formerly knows as Saigon.

Commented on TMc: Obsolete Counties & CourthousesIt is interesting to me that we only have 25% of the Georgia Population still living in rural areas. As a City boy from Atlanta, I would have thought it was higher.
North Carolina for those interested is 34% rural and 66% Urban. "For the 2010 Census, an urban area will comprise a densely settled core of census tracts and/or census blocks that meet minimum population density requirements, along with adjacent territory containing non-residential urban land uses as well as territory with low population density included to link outlying densely settled territory with the densely settled core. To qualify as an urban area, the territory identified according to criteria must encompass at least 2,500 people, at least 1,500 of which reside outside institutional group quarters. The Census Bureau identifies two types of urban areas: • Urbanized Areas (UAs) of 50,000 or more people; • Urban Clusters (UCs) of at least 2,500 and less than 50,000 people. “Rural” encompasses all population, housing, and territory not included within an urban area". Commented on Audie Murphy - A tragic hero 1924-1971Strangely enough, I came to my conclusions not because of any war related revelation but a study of Martin Luther King in trying to resolve my inbred racial biases. Anger and Hate are two of the most destructive emotions.
"We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies". MLK Just a bit of clarification on Hanoi Jane. I had no problem with her protest of the war and the antiwar rallies she attended here. My problem was her visit to Hanoi. There is quite a bit of misinformation about her actions there. I still think that she gave aid and comfort to the enemy and was a propagandist for the NVA. Perhaps she should have been prosecuted. My problem was her posing on an anti-aircraft gun. It is one thing to protest against a war you disagree with, but quite another to aid the enemy. My reason for letting it rest is based on a realization that we all were young once and our over exuberance in our beliefs cause us to do stupid stuff. Forgiving Jane came long after I reconciled with the NVA and the Viet Cong. "Whenever possible I try to sit down with vets and talk with them, because I understand and it makes me sad," Fonda told a relatively full theater, responding to a submitted question. "It hurts me and it will to my grave that I made a huge, huge mistake that made a lot of people think I was against the soldiers." I subscribe to the "Forgive? Maybe. Forget? Never" in the article below. Here is the closest you may get to an apology. www.military.com

Commented on Audie Murphy - A tragic hero 1924-1971I think you are right. I spent most of my life in denial, I finally had one of my Band of Brothers tell me, "You may not suffer from PTSD, but I bet your family does". That was the day I began to deal with it. I still don't think I have a pervasive problem but, I don't like to read about the symptoms in print.
I am working on a draft writing for a Mother's Day article for my Grandpa's Diary family series. It takes time for me to talk or write about her. I was a momma's by from day one and it has made all the difference. I use to tell people that my dad was responsible for me getting back in one piece but my mom was the one who was responsible for me surviving the aftershock.

Commented on Esteemed Ghosts from our PastI was reading an article recently about the most assigned books in Colleges.
The Open Syllabus Project has collected over 1 million syllabi and has extracted citations and other metadata from them. Commented on Audie Murphy - A tragic hero 1924-1971I have always loved Audie since I saw him in To Hell and Back. Later I had a counselor tell me about his PTSD which I never knew about. I had always assumed he was like every other WWII vet I had met. Tough as nails, moving on with life without a second thought. After some research and several autobiographies about him, I was able to reconcile the difference between getting the mission accomplished and living with it afterward.
Fortunately, I never hated the Vietnamese. My mother's example and Christianity would not allow that. I did learn to respect their courage and tenacity and finally accept that It Is what It Is. Hell, I have even forgiven Jane Fonda. I later concluded that Audie went to Hell but may never have come Back. Moreover, he became an inspiration to me once again. Not as a gung ho GI but as a man of dignity and courage dealing with his reality and demons with the same courage he displayed in combat. Here is his memorial site. www.audiemurphy.com One day I will summon the guts to visit The Wall in Washington DC. I will visit Audie as well. I have put it off for forty-eight years and plan on making the trek for my 50th anniversary of my Freshman year at RVN-U.

Here is another quick story from the book. Alex was at a poker game in Baltimore when he was with the Colts. The police raided the game at 4:45AM and arrested everyone but Alex. The next day he had to meet with Don Shula to explain.
"What were you doing playing with a guy with Thirty-Three arrest?" demanded Coach Don Shula. "When you're up at that time of night it's tough enough getting up a game," the Hawk replied, "much less screening the applicants" That was the Hawk, I am on page 92 of a 296 pages in the book. It may be a long night.

Everyone is so upset with Ted Cruz's comments about New York values. Who the hell cares? He ain't gonna win any electoral votes from New York. For a city that prides itself on telling, it like it is and in your face at that, they seem to have extremely thin skin with a flippant comment that may have some truth in it. New York State has voted Democratic in national elections since 1988. Ted Cruz does not have a chance of getting any Electoral votes from NY State, Money yes but no Electoral votes.

Commented on Tin Cans ... Can You Handle The Truth?Great post thank you.
For a short time I was an RTO (radio telephone operator) in the field and almost everything sounded like it was being transmitted through a tin can. I never really enjoyed carrying the PRC 25 radio because it's not much fun walking around on the ground with a whip antenna sticking straight up to alert everyone where you're at. Most of the time you could bend it over and it would not be so obvious but occasionally you had to let it fly high as we said. One of the funniest things that happened was the inevitable order to pop smoke which is what they gave when they needed to identify your location. The protocol was that you would pop smoke the helicopter pilot would respond with the color and then you could confirm color. I popped smoke it was green. Helicopter pilot replied chartreuse I replied saying again. Comeback was it could be emerald or chartreuse but it looks somewhat greenish. The phrase smartfeller did not come to mind but it was damn close.
