Commented on A Modern Man of Great Faith and IntegrityI assume that Nido Qubein is a well-known name in North Carolina as he is the president of High Point University. I became acquainted with him by listening to his motivational tapes years ago.
He is a Lebanese / Jordanian Methodist Christian. His is an exemplary speaker, motivator, and worthy of additional research if you care about getting and maintaining a positive attitude. He was born in 1948, the youngest of five, and grew up in the Middle East. At the age of 17 in 1968, he set out for the U.S. in hopes of obtaining a college education. “I came to this country with 50 bucks,” he said. “As an immigrant to America, I believed with all of my heart if one were to work hard enough, choose friends carefully and make respectable choices, one could obtain the American dream.” Qubein learned the English language, attended Mt. Olive College and entered High Point College as a student in 1968. Following his graduation in 1970, he began his own business in the city. “It’s easy for people to look at me today and say, ‘Boy, he’s really done it, this guy,’” Qubein said. “I worked 17 hours a day, seven days a week to get my business going. I rented a room in a home of an elderly gentleman. That’s how I did it.” That business, he said, evolved into half a dozen, and he was called upon by companies across the country for counseling, consulting and coaching services. In 1993, he joined HPU’s board of trustees. beaufortcountynow.com

Commented on A Modern Man of Great Faith and IntegrityGeorgia has always risen to the cause in the political theater of absurd.
We once had three governors in 1947 none of them elected. One inherited the job from his dad Eugene Talmage, One set up an office in exile Ellis Arnold and Melvin Thompson, a member of the anti-Talmadge camp, was elected lieutenant governor in 1946 but the constitution was unclear on the succession if the Elected governor dies prior to taking the oath. All that would be embarrassing for me if I were older that one at the time. Then we had the horror of Lester Maddox, 1967-71pick axe and all. Finally, we had our good and faithful servant Jimmy Carter as governor in 1971-75. The whole thing taught me a lesson in politics, you cannot inherit political office, a clown should not be elected to office, and there is a big reason for keeping politics and religion separate. This comment is excerpted from my Grandpa’s Diaries” but I could not resist the temptation to tag it to this discussion. Below is a link on the three governor situation. www.georgiaencyclopedia.org

Ted, a visit to Washington, Georgia would be a great weekend. It has been a few years since I was there but you would never believe how many beautiful homes of every style are there antebellum, Victorian. Wyatt, home is always in the heart where ever you are. If I refer correct there is a legend about the confederate gold being buried in the area.

If you want to get Wyatt to comment you must say something bad about Washington, Ga. I spent many a pleasant day there calling on Federal Paper Board (I think) and I still have a good friend who lives there and rented an efficiency in Greenville, SC when the company transferred him there. If you want to know how gracious and friendly the South was and is Washington, Georgia is the place to visit.
On Closer inspection I see the hand rails are too far apart to really be hand rails, I love those old rotating bridges.

Commented on 2001: Mississippi State FlagBefore Ted deletes the comments, I overheard an interesting conversation in West Georgia yesterday and while there is definitely an element of race involved, most were just sick of the government telling them what the hell they could do. There is a backlash coming with the overstepping of the government on individual rights but it will be classified by the media and other left wingers as some sort of hate filled soul. And Gene, if you would just once offer an answer instead of endless questions you may be able to move the discussion along. The technique is wearing thin.

Commented on US Constitution: Amendment ProposalAfter reading this article numerous times, I find that it clearly delineates the problem with our current state of government. We the people have lost control of the Federal Government through either lack of attention or power grabs by both parties. It clearly points to why the Tea Party had and still has a strong base, not based on racism as Gene suggest but on authority usurped by the entrenched officials.

Commented on US Constitution: Amendment ProposalIf we are to follow GS' reasoning, I suggest we also chain one preacher for each 12 lawyers to explain in endless sermons what took Jesus only 24 words to explain:
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. John 13:34King James Version (KJV) I am sure another sermon is to follow.

Commented on The Importance of my High School Typing ClassFor anyone who never took typing in high school, the typing test were timed and errors counted. I don’t remember the exact details but speed expressed as words-per-minute were after deduction for errors. One of the other useless pieces if information stuck in my memory banks is the use if carbon paper to crate copies. As I remember it three sheets was max and errors were corrected by erasure on second and third sheet. The first error was then erased with after pitting a slip of paper behind each carbon paper to prevent smudging. Realign carriage, back space then type in correct letter.
Thank goodness they didn’t wear mini skirts back then because I would still be erasing and back spacing. I do remember one of our finals was the usual timed test and after the teacher called a stop, she said “everyone pass your third sheet to the front for grading". To gain speed, I had neglected to correct the third carbon copy. That could have been an early indication of my problem with authority.

Commented on The Early Church with Jesus GoneThe preacher went to visit a member who had stopped attending church. He ask why and the member said well they are all liars, thief’s and hypocrites to which the preacher replied, don't worry, I don't think one more will hurt.
Then the preacher said, maybe you would be more comfortable coming to our special 7:00AM Friday service for those who have the pure true Christian spirit. The member said that sounds like my kind of people, how many attend that service? The preacher said, I don't know, I'm not allowed to attend but it is held in the vestibule from 7:00 until 7:01 so everyone can be close to the the door after the service.

Commented on Good Ideas Which Man Messed UpI guess I must have missed part of the discussion on this. Who has advocated taking someone's constitutional rights away? We were in agreement until GS veered off in to left field and accused some of us a being oblivious to the rights of the constitution for others.
My suggestion was to have proper armed security at military sites which have been designated by ISIS as targets for terrorism long before the Chattanooga shooting. I find it difficult to equate a terrorist to just being a nonconformist. In what dreamland does someone exist when they cannot call a terrorist a terrorist? Your flaming the word NAZI around does not offer a solution. Buck up and answer your own questions, Socra-Gene. You may find some solutions instead of hurling insults. Terrorism is commonly defined as violent acts (or the threat of violent acts) intended to create fear (terror), perpetrated for an economic,[1] religious, political, or ideological goal, and which deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (e.g., neutral military personnel or civilians

Commented on Obama's Legacy: Iran Nuke Debacle is 'in the Can'It is also the official policy to tell the truth in front of a Grand Jury but Bill must have skipped that class. If we are looking for hypocrites we need go no further than the mirror. What ever the reason or details, Iran felt that it was in their best interest to release the hostages. I will give Carter credit for trying but the failure was due to lack of sufficient resources to accomplish the job.

Commented on Good Ideas Which Man Messed UpGene, This is a good review human nature with all its flaws.
The founders of the USA may have come as close to this ideal as possible with the establishment of a government based on individual rights. Thought the implementation may have been flawed the concept of respect for individual liberty is fundamental. Everyone is free to have their own beliefs as long as their actions do not transgress the rights of others. Today we once again face the prospect of respecting a belief system that’s fundamental thesis is the destruction of our own system. Our system if we would chose to follow it has already addressed the differences in our own society. How we address the other issue remains to be seen. Actions do speak louder than words, Trust but verify, but sometimes actions are preceded by strong indications of intent. When a child falls into the deep end of the pool and cannot swim, we do not want the lifeguard to ask how cold is the water. I suspect that teaching the child to swim beforehand is one solution. As though provoking as the Socratic Method is, it does not provide answers. Today we look for leadership in guiding us toward a solution. We expect that from our elected leaders, community leaders and even from the pulpit. One solution I suggest is to remove the Gun Free Zone sign from the Military recruitment centers and arm those best trained to protect the facility. One of the first lessons of combat is that overwhelming fire suppression downrange tends to discourage the aggressor.

Commented on People Living TogetherA good post Gene, as you point out God created mankind as a moral creature, capable of choosing where or not to obey God. The moral standard was set with the admonition not to partake of the forbidden fruit...Morality is a uniquely human condition as the other animals operate on the level of instinct, but for human beings it is about faith.
I look forward to your expansion of this thesis.
