Good Ideas Which Man Messed Up | Eastern North Carolina Now

Here is a quick review of my previous article:

        •  Man is a social creature with a pecking order

        •  We need and have some kind of rules to help us live together

        •  Any approach to social order can be good or bad---depending on how it is used

        •  All social groups --- even Christ-followers --- have good and bad results

        •  Nobody and no social philosophy is Perfect

Now let's apply these observations to societies based on religion---starting with Jesus.

Each Colony founded on religious principles was a royal failure

Many of the early colonies established in the US with a theocratic (just follow God) dream ultimately failed. The reason was that soon members were saying vastly different things to them "from God." How do you debate such? You end up leaving or complying! It was true in the Old Testament accounts of how the leaders of Israel told the people to do many vile things because "God commands it."

Jesus had the same problems with his disciples early in their time together. Peter was the most outspoken one. He was also the one who denied Jesus 3 times under his cross---all to be safe rather than bold when the swords and spears ruled that day. The Roman Catholic Church claims he was the first Pope since Jesus gave him the "keys to the Kingdom."

In his last words before his ascension Jesus was asked by his disciples, "When will you bring in the Kingdom?" His answer was clear: "The Kingdom of God is within you." In other words, "I don't do it for you. You are responsible for living it out now!"

Arrogant and domineering people who must claim "God said this . . ." are using an argument without logic and real reason. That is dangerous!

What rules do you choose to follow as you form any society?

Before Jesus we had the 10 Commandments Moses brought down for Mt. Sinai. They formed the basis of Jewish society and law. In our day we claim America came from a Judeo-Christian mindset. Some want to claim America is a "Christian" nation even though our Constitution is clear: "Congress shall make no laws concerning religion." The Founding Fathers were deists far more than the special category of Christ-follower. Deists believe in God, but they hesitate to say there is some perfect representation of God here on any earthly religion.

When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus answered: "Love the Lord your God AND you neighbor as yourself." That was asked him of the Pharisees and Scribes who were the lawyers of the day. They had added many minute rules for daily Jewish society with them at the arbiters of their following. You may remember them charging Jesus and is disciples of harvesting on the Sabbath when they walked through a field and plucked grain they husked in their palms before they ate it.

Jesus asked: "Is the Sabbath made for man or man for the Sabbath?"

The Pharisees called it "building a fence around the law." What they meant was to add little rules you would break before getting to the main 10 commandments. If you think nothing has changed with society since Jesus, then check the catalogue-size book in the back seat of a Highway Patrolman with all the "fences around the law" to fill out a traffic ticket correctly.

The lawyers dominate our NC Legislature and that of DC. The more laws they write, the more work for their buddies with law degrees loving their billable hours to defend people charged with running afoul of the law. Our nation started with a Declaration of Independence and next a Constitution ratified by the original 13 Colonies, now States. Compare the law volumes today with the first law library in Boston and you see a massive expansion---all looking to "build a fence around the Constitution."

All societies begin with laws---called "Mores" (more-a's) ---by sociologists. That which is acceptable in one society is anathema in another! For example, no woman in Jewish society could own property and work to make a living. They were totally tied to men. In Egypt and Greece women could own property --- and even be priestesses. In Greek society homosexuality and prostitution were accepted. In Jewish law it would send you to hell or a stoning!

Ego Trouble rears its ugly head in Jesus' band

Perhaps, the biggest trouble Jesus had was internal with his immediate followers. Soon after enlisting the 12, they began to battle over who would sit at Jesus' left and right which were the places of honor at any meal. Those different personalities spanned from arrogant and outspoken Paul to Andrew who became famous over bringing a small lad to Jesus with his loaves and fishes to offer to a big crowd. Judas was the one who betrayed his Savior for money! All kinds of different men and women followed Jesus. Some better and some worse---all striving to follow some most high standards by God's Son.

The most astounding example of ego-competition was at the Last Supper as the disciples debated among themselves who would sit beside Jesus ---to the exclusion of a basic custom of a servant washing dusty feet of any coming to dinner. As they fussed and fumed, Jesus quietly took a towel and began to wash their feet without a word being spoken. Actions speak louder than words / no amount of written material can erase the basic humility and love of Jesus example!

I shall continue this analysis of society with another article soon to follow . . .

The nature of mankind and society is to have a dream and live in a reality not always as pretty as the dream --- but with hope of improvement.

The US Founders saw all this in the Old World. There were riches and beauty for a few, but the vast majority barely got by. My Scarborough ancestors came from a castle and town of the name north of London. Nobody who was IN hoped a little wooden ship for the frontier and unknown.

As I have visited Europe and twice to England I note how well-manicured the land is because man has been playing with it for way more years than North America. There are river beds carefully lined with rock for pristine water. There are statues and old buildings along with ornate churches BUT I asked myself how these notables really were in life. In America we attend church with fanaticism / in Europe and England not so much~~~and they treat one another a bit better there too!

Were they equitable and fair or were they in it for themselves and at the end covered it with paid writers of history to make them look good. The constant temptation in religious practices is to cow to the rich and powerful even if they are crooked as a snake? Some had best be buried with asbestos underwear because God is not fooled and, in reality, man sees clearly in his last days on earth.

The reward for non-conformity can be the little church in the corner of town over the big one on Church Street. I have also known people who lived what they preached and we are the better for it.

Work for others / work for yourself alone ~~~ it is hard for people to look in the mirror when they are doing well. Some who stayed in the Old World were as good as it gets. Those who came over here and took land from the Native Americans and gave them social diseases and booze were not a dab better when the moral ruler comes out.

Just a Sunday PM note: You do not have to hate people to kill them. Ask any Vet.
Also, you do not need to be crazy. Drone strikes happen daily by totally sane people. Back to How Man Messes up--we are trying to create an imaginary world that is out of our control. Preachers pray for heaven on earth. Lots of luck with that.

Gene, It's Sunday, you need to give all that "'hate' speech" a rest.

We are now Minority Ruled by the Supreme Court. I am writing an article about Preachers and Politicians who live in an Imaginary World where Peace and Love make this World a heavenly place.

The article is about "how man messes up." The Founding Fathers believed in free speech and a free press with voters --- by their majority --- electing their representatives. If you use this on your statement, Stan, then you have to conclude we are messed up with hate more each day in a nation of "liberty and justice for ALL."

Gene, there exists a state of war in the U.S., and has for some time.

The more you Liberals deny it, the worse it is going to get. Lying about it as Amateur Obama has done, and Ms. Benghazi Clinton has done will not abate this very real situation.

Your article MURDER IN SC showed some passion. Calling this an incident in Chatt is a little subdued.

No further comment required on this absurdity.
GS is doing well debating himself.

Over and out

You guys make me laugh!

We have an incident in Chattanooga and now we are going to play little scared puppet to hunker down and shoot anyone in a robe or head garb. THEY WIN!!!

I have been overseas where military guards are in airports with automatic weapons at the ready. The same airport in Amsterdam I walked through had a bomb go off a few years after my passage---therefore, all the guns and vigilance could not stop a crazy person from leaving a briefcase in the corner.

I am more than sick over pretended Homeland Security and TSA stuff and when they check them out all the delays and pretense are virtually worthless. Just like guns, only the owners make people dead---for better or worse.

Peace, brothers---get off you pretense of super control in a land of supposed freedom . . .

I guess I must have missed part of the discussion on this. Who has advocated taking someone's constitutional rights away? We were in agreement until GS veered off in to left field and accused some of us a being oblivious to the rights of the constitution for others.
My suggestion was to have proper armed security at military sites which have been designated by ISIS as targets for terrorism long before the Chattanooga shooting.
I find it difficult to equate a terrorist to just being a nonconformist. In what dreamland does someone exist when they cannot call a terrorist a terrorist?
Your flaming the word NAZI around does not offer a solution.

Buck up and answer your own questions, Socra-Gene. You may find some solutions instead of hurling insults.
Terrorism is commonly defined as violent acts (or the threat of violent acts) intended to create fear (terror), perpetrated for an economic,[1] religious, political, or ideological goal, and which deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants (e.g., neutral military personnel or civilians

I agree with GS view of an ideal world. It saddens me to say I do not think that world will never come to pass in my life time.

I agree with SD and add that all Military should have carry permits. Why should a military base wait for civilian police to arrive?
