Come along and enjoy the sights and sounds Goose Creek Trail has to offer. It’s approximately 2 miles long and runs through a variety of ecosystems. You’ll pass by a sandy swim beach located on the Pamlico River and then experience black gum and cypress swamps. Please meet at the last parking lot inside the park.

Sunday, January 1, 2012 New Year’s Day Hike 1 p.m.

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to be more active? Then start off 2012 right with a 4.5 mile hike on several of the park’s trails that pass through upland pine forests, mixed hardwood forests, marshes, and beach communities. Meet in the Environmental Education and Visitor Center and dress appropriately for the weather.

Combat Crime

On February 18, 2012 William Derrick Coltrainat approximately 1:45 a.m., Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division responded to The Rebel located at 718 River Road in Washington, NC in reference to a weapons offense. Deputies arrived at the scene and began an investigation. Deputies learned a white male discharged several rounds from a .40 caliber handgun inside and outside of the building. On December 18, 2011, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of Animal Cruelty at a home on Big Buck Drive in Chocowinity, NC. Animal Control Officers and Deputies responded to the scene and located a deceased boxer mix canine tied to the back porch area of a home. The canine was transported by Beaufort County Animal Control to Raleigh where a necropsy was performed by the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System. On February 10, 2012, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Brandon James Burbage, age 20, of 73 Robert Cox Rd. Bath and Lora Rowe Beacham, age 30, of 3195 99 S Belhaven. Their arrests stemmed from Investigators conducting a vehicle stop on Beacham’s vehicle on the Sydney Rd. in Pinetown. Allen Garfield Swanner Jr.On February 15, 2012, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit along with Officers with the North Carolina Division of Community Corrections arrested Allen Garfield Swanner Jr., age 22, of 154 Windley Rd. Washington. Swanner’s arrest stemmed from Investigators conducting controlled purchases of marijuana. Swanner was on probation as a result of drug convictions when the controlled purchases of marijuana were conducted.

Beaufort County Schools Overview

The high school dropout count for Beaufort County Schools grew by 1 student, 110 to 111, from the 2009-2010 school year to 2010-2011. This according to the 2010-2011 Consolidated Report release by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction last week. The rate increased from 4.90% to 5.02%. Drop out numbers for Beaufort County Schools remains greatly improved from the 2006-2007 peak of 145 students dropping out of high school.

Aerial mosquito spraying in coastal areas of Beaufort County will be performed Wednesday or Thursday evening to help combat the dramatic increase in mosquito populations as a result of rains from Hurricane Irene.
