Frankie Waters tenure running Tri-County Telephone into the ground should be a cautionary tale on letting Waters anywhere near management of public money. Under Waters "leadership" Tri County went belly up and had to be sold off to an out-of-town entity.

Terry Williams was a switch-hitter on Snowden. He went along with Cheeseman until the last minute when Cheeseman no longer needed his vote and it was politically advantageous at the very last minute to switch to supporting Snowden. If Williams had truly been a Snowden supporter at an earlier stage where it mattered the end result may have been different, but he preferred to play both sides of the issue the way sleazy politicians do.

Years ago, eastern NC still had quite a few conservative Democrats, often called Jessecrats for their support of Senator Jesse Helms, but that breed is now an extinct critter. All of the action is in the Republican Party, starting with the Republican primary.

The Republican Party rules do not allow the party itself to take sides in a primary. Most party officials are allowed to do so as individuals but cannot use party resources or titles to do so. When it comes to the general election, the party is obligated to support all party nominees against those running under any other banner. Party activity during the primary period that involves candidates should be evenhanded to allow all candidates to participate and meet the voters.

Our recent Beaufort County Republican convention elected a group of party officers and executive committee members who represent a cross section of various elements of the party. They are just beginning work on preparing for next year's elections. I am confident that our party now has a leadership team that will play by the rules in all respects and run an efficient and effective political operation for the 2026 election.

Voters should focus on policies rather than personalities in evaluating candidates. From the records of incumbents and the policy positions of non-incumbents, they should look to which candidates best represent the voters own views of what our county, state, and their governments need. For eastern North Carolina, that is generally a conservative viewpoint.

Truth matters so get the facts correct. You insinuated I supported the Snowden closing. I DID NOT and my vote to keep Snowden open should prove it. I attended all meetings and listen to all speakers, visited schools, spoke with many residents and parents in my district and came to the conclusion my vote should be to keep Snowden open. That's why I voted as such. I believe that is the way it should work.

Let's take a survey. How many people with business experience do we have on any of our boards? Look at the gallant effort that has been put into trying to save Aurora, except for the school system. Many things attract young people to a community to make it grow. The basics that they all look at are the three S's—school, Service, and Safety. When you kill the school, they do not look any further. The debacle of our county and city taxes and our school system is terrible. Half-filled school buildings, eight schools out of thirteen with poor ratings, 30-35% of our Children at reading level. So instead of fixing the Problem, let's close of one of the poorly rated schools and make the Superintendent look better. After all, they are mostly black kids, let'em ride the bus one to one and a half hours one way to school. That's the easy way out for the board, but a lousy way to run a railroad.

Stan, Regarding buying back the closed schools.

I understand that there is a govt system of rules regarding ownership of real estate such as the schools.
Its just that it suddenly dawned on me that it all seemed rather rigged against the taxpayers.

We taxpayers of Beaufort County, give the money to the school system to build and then own that school property. Then, if they close the school down, the school system doesnt just give it back to the taxpayers of Beaufort County who funded the whole thing in the first place, instead we taxpayers have to buy back... the school we paid for in the first place. (If the Commissioners choose to make that decision.)

Yes I know the taxpayers dont own it, but we are always Paying for it.
Both coming and going. What a world!

From a clear eyed historical point of view, Barack Hussein Obama was the second worse president of my lifetime, presiding over a most corrupt administration.

The worst president, of my 3 score and ten, was Idiot President Biden, who was an incredible traitor to this Constitutional Republic, and we have paid mightily for his calamitous Non Presidency.

Hopefully a revised education system will help this nation foment a far more intelligent voting public.

Of course, Barack Hussein Obama needed the propaganda willingly offered by the OMG (Obama Media Group) to survive his presidency basically unscathed, so America's first Non Patriot President would absolutely benefit greatly from censorship.

Washingtonian: On Snowden, it is a general statute situation that the county commissioners have to buy and pay market value, which would not be very much considering what schools sell for historically, especially in Aurora.

I am strongly in favor of buying all school buildings back in Beaufort County, as the local school board is now so intent on consolidating so as to keep children in buses for large blocks of time in their young active parts of their lives, and also to evidently to reduce parental involvement.

My strong feeling is that now, with School Choice evolving in North Carolina, inexpensive school buildings could be a probable incubator for better managed charter schools and private schools, or ... if the Beaufort County School Board learns how to assert itself into a management position, then they could take the building back from the commissioners, and finally ... Do what it is prudent and right!

City government is a two man show. The current city council is a toothless joke because a majority is in the mayor's hip pocket. If he says jump, they ask "how high?". Between the major and the manager, I suspect that if the item in on the mayor's personal agenda, he calls the shots, and if not, it is the manager. Of course, Sadler's wife is the power behind his throne, and in many ways, she may be the one calling the shots. At city council meetings, one can witness her furiously texting the mayor up at the front telling him what to do, and him looking down at his phone reading her text instructions. And she holds no elected office. What a sad state our city government is in. Our school board and county are not any better.
