All three had good answers and truthfully getting three existing councils out and replace them with these three candidates will be a positive thing. It’s time out for just holding seats. Don’t vote for people because you know them or because of race but vote for the person that honestly care and wants change for all.

I recorded a Ray Whitley song (called "Let's Try Something New") around 1967 or so with Ray as our producer at the classic "Old Schoolhouse" studio in Brookhaven community where most of the Atlanta recorded hits of the 1960's were recorded (including the Tams hits) I really enjoyed that session and was sad to hear of Ray's passing.

John Valley: Good points, I guess only time will tell on DC's future.

On a little personal note, Dean Cain was my least favorite Superman and his acting skills went so far downhill to the point where he was "CANCELLED" and no-one would or will hire him for any roles, maybe he should have stayed out of politics as all actors should. He said that he left acting to focus on family, but I don't by it! The truth was that he was 99.98% "CANCELLED" because of his political views and statements.

Also, Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman and one last cool fact, Reeve's son makes a guest appearance in the new film, and that is at least one good thing about the new film I suppose.
(commented on July 27th, 2025 @ 12:41 pm)
Dean Cain doesn't know what he's talking about! I did some quick research to find out that Superman 2025 is already a box office hit. The budget for that film was $350 million and it's already hit $415.1 million worldwide and climbing. So, it did not loss any money at all and everything earned from now on is straight profit!

How to Train your Dragon is doing a lot better with a smaller budget of $150 million and currently at a box office of $592.6 million worldwide which is some damn good profit right there!

I'm curious. Does the Council members and Commissioners (and candidates) believe they are here to represent THE people, or rather to represent the local GOVT along with all its depts?

I think WeThePpl are last on the totem pole of concerns.

I want to know as a citizen of the City and the County, do the Commissioners have any Duty/Responsibility to protect me from City corruption? I heard one Commissioner say that what the City does is not his concern.

Also, the City/County purpose paving a roadway for 1.6 million. The Commissioner said: That's a lot of $$. Then another one said well half of that would be the City's part. WELL, the City has no $$. Its WeTheCitizens paying. If the County pays half and the City pays half, then that means, I AM PAYING 100%. Quit being so generous with OTHER PEOPLE's MONEY! Quit treating Money like it's FREE.

Stan, I listened to table talk. Thanks for your time doing this.
I think this should be done EVERY WeeK until the election. We need to know more!! Time is short and this election is critical. We cant afford another corrupt Govt.
Lastly, You should invite us to send you OUR questions. I want to know what these candidates think the role of the City Manager is? The current Council thinks the City Manager is there to do their thinking for them. All Council meetings are choregraphed. Its just a performance, even the motions are written by the City Manager's "Team Players," for the Council members to read. I suspect they dont even know what they are reading, and the decision for how they vote has been pre-planned by "The Staff." "The Staff" is code word for the Manager's henchmen. We need new blood who will promise to do the work and think for themselves. I fear the new, will be the same as the old.

First, let me acknowledge that the roles of County Commissioners and School Board Members are not easy. When done well, these positions require dedication, thoughtful decision-making, and hard work. Thank you to all who serve and help keep the county functioning as smoothly as possible.

That said, there is a quadrant of this county, the third largest of six townships and the fourth most populated, that is the source of the most local income and tax revenue and includes multiple communities and an incorporated town, that is now functioning worse from the decision of the School Board. This area and its school district are now destabilized. The elementary school and the people it served were not considered important enough for elected officials to explore reasonable alternatives before removing the school from an entire township community.

Consolidation has been ongoing for over a century. For the first 50 years, and during the 60s and 70s desegregation, it made sense. But as it has become more centralized, it increasingly fails to serve the unique needs of local elementary aged children, especially in remote communities like Aurora when viewed through the lens of child well being. Despite the education and experience among Board Members, the emphasis was less on children than on balancing the county’s overall education budget at the expense of one of its most underserved and remote school populations. Instead of lobbying for more resources to meet the actual needs, the Board chose to close the least visible school.

We’re hearing from families now forced to relocate, change jobs, or cancel their plans to move into the area. Others, who just moved here before the closure decision, are scrambling to figure out how to manage their children’s schooling and their family’s stability. Busing small children for long hours each day should have been reason enough to reconsider. But the impact goes beyond logistics; this decision is dismantling a community one family at a time.

Had proper impact studies been conducted, as required by state policy, the Board would have likely seen this coming. But for most Board members, this isn’t your district, and these aren’t your families being affected. While I don’t believe the decision was made with malice, I do believe that if this were your children, your school, and your community on the line, you and others would have made a different choice.

Didn't Carolyn Walker and Daniel Hudson both give Cheeseman the votes he needed to close the school in Aurora? Seems like that bought a promotion for one’s daughter and a better report card for the other’s. Cronyism, nepotism, corruption much? Maybe the coincidental timing just make the optics look bad. It really does stink to high heaven…better watch your step and lift your trouser legs if you walk near the BCS bunch.

As I studied more I said that there was a possibility of polluting the waterways. Slowly over the years my predictions came to life.with Pollutants come the the chance of cancer and that has happened also.

Good morning Mr. Blinson,

Thank you for your article of June 17. It was amazing. So many points that I and those of us who have taken a great interest in, you have summed up in this piece. You are so correct that Snowden is a big part of this entire picture currently, but the bigger picture is as Snowden goes, so goes the County of Beaufort. It is not about consolidating everything and pulling it all closer to Washington. That should not be their growth plan. Tt is more about the County Leaders having the foresight to push economic development and growth to all parts of its territory. "Share the wealth and the wealth will be shared with you guys." It is a sad day when a small town feels the need to cross County borders for a vast number of resources; thereby, increasing the economy in its neighboring county, Pamlico, who opened its arms to Aurora/Richland Township residents.

Sincerely,

Joy Peele Dunn, President
Aurora Richland Township Chamber of Commerce

Stan, we have a real opportunity during this election. Lou Hodges is not running; William Pitt withdrew from the race; and Brooks barely skated in last time. That's three potential seats. If the conservatives in Washington really turn out this year the Republicans will control the Washington City Council for the first time in living memory. We can accomplish amazing things. If we use that wave of enthusiasm we can tip the scales during the County Commisioners race and we can have the the city and county controlled by conservatives! This is the year to make great things happen! Let's ruduce property tax to nearly zero percent, trim the budget by 10%, cut utility costs by 10%, and ferret out all corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse!
(commented on June 25th, 2025 @ 4:20 pm)
BCCitizen: there are roughly 4700 employed citizens in the City of Washington. The City's budget is roughly $57 million. (That's $117 million minus $60 million for utilities). That's $12,127 per working working citizen. It's atrocious.
(commented on June 21st, 2025 @ 10:15 am)
Washingtonian: much to the chagrin of those encouraging me to run for office, I love engaging with people on ideas! I am not running for office to get my name elected. I am runnning because I want to change things. If the citizens support my ideals and ideas then I'll be elected. If they don't then I won't. But I cannot and will not skirt around my principles in the hopes of winning votes. So here we go.. I've seen a lot of grumbles, but I have yet to see any practical advice. If you were elected tomorrow onto the city council, what would you do?

My understanding is
Brooke McGowen won the popular vote by 4 votes. Because the rules use a weighted vote- the # of qualified delegates at each district is included. I think Beaufort County has 40 qualified to come to the convention. Only 13 of us were there voting but once we had a majority voting for Brooke McGowen instead of Jason Simons, she got 40 “weighted votes”
She lost by 805 votes.
Some counties have hundreds of qualified delegates.
Sooo… we as a smaller county could increase our voting power if we could enlarge the # of eligible delegates.

Rino Hunter - this probably is my last comment here because apparently no one on here is interested in the truth. Where did I say the Snowden discussion was behind closed doors? No where did I say that. Besides if you want to have a transparent conversation then sign your name and stop hiding behind the ridiculous Rino Hunter. So easy to make unsubstantiated claims when you hide.

Hood Richardson - You can remind me so let me remind you. Once the Snowden issue was brought up for discussion, which has been a discussion for more than 10 years, I voted for transparency and to allow the voice of the people to be heard. Something you preach all the time until it doesn't fit your narrative. My vote had nothing to do with anyone else's decision or vote. Ask your trusted board member you refer to all the time did I not tell them more than a week ahead of the vote I would be a NO vote. You just can't accept the truth that sometimes people actually do what they feel is right. I'm indebted to no one but those good people of Chocowinity who continue to support me and I will always support them 100%.

Every since Nutrien crossed the street and found more ore, the continuation of the destruction of aurora continues. Only building with ay taxes going to it is the school, post office, and liqour store. The town isn't good enough for a bank, grocery store, drs office, and now any school, but there's a person in that liqour store everyday selling shot bottles of liqour to the community. The county wants aurora to be gone and if I was a resident of that town I'd be heartbroken. No taxes are going towards helping them. Its a travesty.

Please consider joining the journalism movement to stop being partisan and continuing the civil divide. This is why newspapers and corporate media is drying up. We the people are in a crisis of confidence in our representatives and government services that help the people without millions or billions of dollars. We still count and right now we need Responsible Journalism and not hate divisive rhetoric.

Illegal immigrants in the United States have the right to due process, meaning they cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without fair legal proceedings. This right is guaranteed by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. While the extent of due process protections may vary depending on the circumstances, all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, are entitled to some form of fair legal procedures.

Fifth Amendment:

This amendment states that "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law".

Fourteenth Amendment:

This amendment uses the Due Process Clause, which describes the legal obligation of all state governments to provide equal protection of the laws to all persons, regardless of their immigration status.

Happy Birthday Hood. It’s always interesting to me that people think because you vote to lower taxes, you are automatically a good steward. Going all the way to Washington DC on the taxpayers dime is such an accomplishment. Kudos. It’s also quite interesting that the employees are held to a strict per dime that doesn’t even cover meals while ALL commissioners eat high on the hog. Them $40 breakfasts and $50 dinners on the taxpayers dime isn’t being a good steward. It’s giving “do as I say, not as I do”. It’s amazing what a public information request reveals.

(d) The Department of Public Instruction shall review projected enrollment to evaluate the reasonableness of a project's size and scope.

Dr. Cheeseman made it very clear at the Monday, May 19, 2025 meeting of the Beaufort County commissioners budget meeting that HE would not be closing the S. W. Snowden school in Beaufort County. He clearly stated if the school was closed it would be the responsibility of the elected school board members. It is also very clear that closing Snowden is his preference and he will encourage the elected members to consent to his desires. Dr. Cheeseman and the staff that works at his pleasure are responsible for assigning teachers and teacher assistants to each school. Should a school board member not bend to his wishes, he can reassign key personnel from one school to another district school requiring longer travel time for teachers.
Hood is correct. If there is a constant rumbling that the Snowden is slated for for closure, it is natural for parents to select other options for their children's educational options when available.
Aurora and the Richlands community deserve better.

Shreve and Carlton did not vote to close SW Snowden. They voted to have public hearings to allow the public to voice their opposition or support for closing SW Snowden. Voting not to hold public hearings would have deprived the public an opportunity provided the NC General Assembly.

What was mentioned that public schools with 100 or less students could be closed. Actually, the statute says that schools with less than 100 students would not have a 12 month principle paid for by the state.

There are options to closing and transporting students to Chocowinity, NC. The Snowden school could be classified as an Academy. See the link below.

www.ncleg.gov

Another option would be to allow the Richland Township students to attend the elementary and middle schools in Pamlico County. The Pamlico County schools are 10-15 miles from Aurora, not 23-35 miles from Chocowinity. The public hearings will allow everyone to explore these options.

Trump has no interest in saving the whales or lowering your utility bills. He plans on drilling in the ocean. Drilling will kill far more then the whales. Drill Baby Drill.

Stan: You are an old white man, and Ms. Abrams is a progressive black woman.

Is it it any wonder that you say these negative things about her just she learned how to work the system like you old white men.

Those answers are simple, and can be simply summed up in one answer: Donald Trump is Hitler.

Giving the Army a grand 250th birthday celebration was the right move. It is important to remind the people of this nation (99% who have not served themselves since the creation of the all volunteer military) what it takes to give us the freedoms we enjoy. This is more important given all of the things happening with China, Iran, Russia, North Korea and more. Hegseth served low enough in the ranks not to be corrupted by the bureaucratic and political issues that have been detrimental to the military over the past 20-30 years. His leadership and vision to bring back the focus on lethality and the warrior ethos within our armed forces is vital and necessary. The sharp increase in recruitment since Trump was reelected is a clear demonstration that the people who serve and protect America, many who come from multiple generations of veterans, didnt agree with the Biden/Obama eras of DEI and mismanagement in DoD.

Wasn't our nation started because We the People opposed an actual King? Were we not opposed to taxation without representation? Did we not fight back when those who would oppress us came for our firearms, the AR-15s of the day, at Lexington and Concord? Don't our founding documents lay out a limited federal government so that the sovereign states could represent their people according to what they believed best? People shouldn't fear their government, governments should fear their people. They do work for us after all, not the other way around. Its sad to many people don't realize this or remember it. Its a travesty the bureaucrats and seemingly more often the judiciary don't understand this either.

Thanks are in order to Charles Hickman and Stacey Davis for standing up for and voting in favor of keeping Snowden open. They represented the Beaufort County people's voiced concerns and wishes. It's a shame the school board and county commissioners don't have more elected officials who do this.

What is surprising is that Terry Williams voted against closing Snowden. That should be worthy of applause as well. Maybe he had a change of heart and chose to listen to the people considering he traditionally votes lockstep with the superintendent's agenda. However, this is doubtful and was probably more a case of serving his own interests. He never once spoke out against or advocated for saving Snowden at any board meeting or public meeting concerning the issue. If he were so in favor of keeping the school open, why didn't he make more of an effort to advocate that principle during the lead up to this vote. Maybe he knew the vote to close was already decided before the meeting but wanted to appear to take a stand with a reelection year coming up. Maybe it's unpopular with Chocowinity voters to have Aurora students coming to Chocowinity schools. Either way, kudos to him for voting to save the school.
