Winter's Tale | Eastern North Carolina Now

Director Akiva Goldsman's directorial debut was a minor success, made possible by a good screenplay, by Director Goldsman, of a fine Mark Helprin story. What made the film better received by this reviewer was the outstanding acting by all mentioned, and including Jennifer Connelly, as a later day reporter for Penn Publishing, William Hurt, as Beverley's father, Issac Penn, and Eva Marie Saint (the same actress from the classic films: North by Northwest and On the Waterfront) as Beverley's little sister, grown into an elderly woman nearly a hundred years old. The actors made this film believable because of their finely honed crafting of characters within this fantastic tale. The film, at 118 minutes of run time, would not have worked otherwise - not at this level of competency.

Rated PG-13, released on DVD June 24, 2014.
