Governor McCrory Appoints New State Controller | Eastern NC Now

Governor Pat McCrory has appointed Linda Morrison Combs, former Controller of the United States, to become North Carolina State Controller. Combs' appointment requires confirmation by the General Assembly.

    Raleigh, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory has appointed Linda Morrison Combs, former Controller of the United States, to become North Carolina State Controller. Combs' appointment requires confirmation by the General Assembly.

    "Linda Morrison Combs brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Controller's Office, as well as a love for her native North Carolina," said Governor McCrory. "Her considerable expertise will greatly benefit the state's taxpayers."

    Combs lives in Winston-Salem and was born in Caldwell County. At the federal level, Combs has served three U.S. presidents in a variety of roles. She has been confirmed five times by the United States Senate.

    As Controller of the United States, Combs regularly briefed President George W. Bush on the financial management of federal departments. She also frequently testified before numerous Congressional oversight committees.

    Under her leadership, the U.S. Controller's office reduced improper payments by $9 billion and disposed of $4.5 billion of unneeded real property.

    Combs also served as Chief Financial Officer at the Environmental Protection Agency and held Assistant Secretary or equivalent Chief Operating Officer positions at the Departments of Transportation, Treasury, Veterans Affairs and Education.

    In the private sector, Combs founded three successful companies and took their products to worldwide distribution. She also held management positions, with significant profit and loss responsibilities, at a large Southeastern bank.

    Combs received her doctorate from Virginia Tech. She received an undergraduate and a master's degree from Appalachian State University and is a graduate of the Program for Senior Managers at Harvard University.

    She also earned a Bank Director Certification from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks. She also has certification in Finance and Banking Operations from the American Bankers Association.

    Combs is slated to take office on May 5.
