Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C.    Governor Pat McCrory has proclaimed May "Motorsports Month" in North Carolina, celebrating the many contributions of racing to the state and economy.

"Racing and motorsports have helped define our state and drive our economy," said Governor McCrory. "We are proud of the rich history of motorsports in North Carolina and that so many teams, tracks and events call our state home. Today we celebrate that legacy, as well as the industry's bright future."

The governor signed the proclamation at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and was joined by NASCAR Hall of Fame member Richard Petty, Bruton and Marcus Smith of Speedway Motorsports, NASCAR drivers Marcos Ambrose and Aric Almirola, as well as state and local officials.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup events, the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, two NASCAR Nationwide Series events and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event. In May alone, NASCAR racing contributes an estimated economic impact of $230 million to the Charlotte region.

However, the impact of racing and motorsports goes far beyond the Charlotte region. North Carolina is home to more NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, Nationwide Series teams and Camping World Truck Series teams than any other state. Ninety percent of the world's NASCAR teams are based in North Carolina and the state is home to 1,000 motorsport businesses, teams and tracks. It is also home to the largest dirt track racing event in the world and the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte.

Each year, more than a million fans attend racing events throughout North Carolina. Motorsports contributes $6 billion to North Carolina's economy annually and supports 25,000 jobs in the state.
