Vidant Pungo: NAACP Held a Press Conference at 10:30 am Today | Eastern NC Now

Vidant Pungo is not dead yet, but time is of the essence.

Update: Friday, June 27, 2014 @ 4:50 pm:

From one of my sources, who attended the NAACP press conference this day: 'The NAACP, has filed Title 6 (Voting Rights Act) supplemental allegations with the United States Department of Justice, which were tacked on to the original complaint of the Town of Belhaven against Vidant Health.

In that complaint, the Town of Belhaven and the NAACP of North Carolina allege improprieties exist between Vidant Health and Pantego Creek LLC (those who control the hospital's site). Furthermore, for Vidant Health to remain a nonprofit, and receive those protections from the Federal government, they must either provide suitable health care, or allow others that will, in this Health Care desert of eastern Beaufort County and most all of Hyde County'.

I hope I have rendered this appropriately in words as per my understanding. If I have published anything contrary to the known truth, please feel free to submit a comment to the contrary. Within 24 hours, I hope to have other contributions on this subject, so please keep an eye on BCN if this issue is important to you.

Vidant Pungo: NAACP to Hold a Press Conference at 10:30 am Today

Information (previous) release on the NAACP Press Conference:

Vidant Pungo is not dead yet, but time is of the essence. The timing is essential at this point with Vidant Health of Greenville, NC, unceremoniously, communicating that they will cease all operations as of the end of June, 2014.

In response to all the mixed signals erupting from Vidant Health and their coalition partner, Pantego Creek LLC, the Town of Belhaven, coupled with the NAACP, is expecting to file an injunction to keep negotiations in process. Remarkably, Vidant Health did at one point pledged one million dollars to sustain Vidant Pungo after the Beaufort County Commissioners voted to loan the fledgling rural hospital two million dollars, in a secured loan, as a lifeline to give the people of Belhaven, and all points east, the ability to keep their hospital viable. Now Vidant Health just wants to work to close the rural hospital as it is now the expressed wishes of Pantego Creek LLC.

But why then the one Million dollar offer of help to the Town and people of Belhaven and eastern Beaufort County and Hyde County for that matter.

Today, the Town of Belhaven, and the NAACP of North Carolina, will endeavor their continuance of that rural oasis of health care when they hold a press conference:

Latest Governing Beaufort County

The city council has only made two official acts as of February 16, 2026
While this afternoon’s update once again included increased probabilities of moderate to major impacts, it will likely be tomorrow before we receive specific accumulation details.
Government and its bureaucracy are not perfect, and never has been in this self-governed society, here at the local level, at our state level, and at our federal level, therefore, it is incumbent upon all elected politicians to seek a comfortable level of representation for our constituents.
Beaufort County is implementing a new emergency alert system. All residents are encouraged to sign up to receive alerts via phone and email.

Has the local government acted responsibly and transparently?
Beaufort County Commissioners meet, and work by a majority vote to do the business of those constituents they purport to represent.
