Washington High School students use skills to benefit community

Again this year, the Life Skills Class at Washington High School hosted the Pam Pack Café as a part of their class curriculum. Students take reservations and serve meals for the staff at their school. Meals they have prepared from the beginning - grocery shopping. As a class, the students plan and prepare each menu for the café. On the day of the event, the hostess greets visitors at the door and takes their tickets. Other members of the class have a well-planned assembly line, including parts of the meal and dessert, ready to be delivered to their customers. These exercises provide impactful training for students who face challenges most will never understand.

Proceeds raised from the café are then donated to a worthwhile cause. Earlier this year while on a visit to the original Washington Fire Department, students in the Life Skills Class made an important decision. This year's proceeds would support their local firefighters.

Laurie Lietz explained that her class made this decision after talking with firefighters about how the fire house runs, and learning they had to make some daily purchases on their own, the students decided to take care of the people who care for them.

The final café for this school year was held on Friday, May 13. Representatives from the Washington Fire Department were unable to attend, however; the class made a site visit to present them with $350 raised this school year.

The menu for the final café of the year? A gorgeous chef salad and strawberry shortcake.
