    We will take a relaxing hike through pines draped with Spanish moss down to the Mallard Creek pier and loop around the Huckleberry Trail. Meet in the last parking lot.

      Saturday, November 1, 2014       Introduction to Forestry       2:00 pm

    Learn about the principles and practices for managing, using and enjoying forests. Meet in the visitor center.

      Saturday, November 15, 2014       Waterfowl of the Pamlico       10:00 am

    Come out and see mounts of the many different kinds of waterfowl that visit the area each winter and we’ll discuss migration, waterfowl biology and life cycles. Meet at the visitor center.

      Saturday, November 22, 2014       Live Oak and Huckleberry Trail Hike       2:00 pm

    See two of Goose Creek’s unique ecosystems, the Live Oak river community and the pine woods savannah, while walking along the shores of the Pamlico River. Meet in the last parking lot.

      Tuesday, November 25, 2014       Palmetto Boardwalk Hike       2:00 pm

    Come take a look at the hardwood swamp that’s transitioning to a marsh and see what kinds of animals call this wetland home. Meet at the visitor center.

    Meet at the park office for a power point presentation about North Carolina’s native bear.

      Saturday, December 6, 2014       Movies with the Stars: The Grinch       2:00 pm

    Start the Christmas season off by enjoying The Grinch, starring Jim Carey under the beautiful night sky. We will have a large fire to help keep you toasty. In case it is too cold or there is inclement weather, we will show the movie in the Visitor Center’s Auditorium. The event is free but we are asking for Pet Food Donations. The pet food donations will go to the Pet Food Pantry of Eastern North Carolina. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the park at (252)923-2191. Remember to bring blankets and seating.

      Saturday, December 13, 2014       Palmetto Boardwalk Hike       2:00 pm

    Meet at the park office for a one mile hike through the Palmetto Swamp.

      Tuesday, December 16, 2014       Naval Stores Hike       2:00 pm

    We will take an easy one mile hike down the Tar kiln Trail to take a look at one of the many tar kilns located at the park and discuss the importance of the naval stores industry from the colonial times up until the early 20th century. Meet at the Ivey Gut parking lot.

      Saturday, December 20, 2014       Longleaf Pine Ecosystem       2:00 pm

    Take a step back in history and find out what the Southeastern United States looked like before European Settlement and learn why the Longleaf Pine ecosystem was so important to the economy and environment of the area. Meet at the Visitor Center.

      Sunday, December 21, 2014       The Story of Mistletoe       2:00 pm

    What a great program to attend right before Christmas. Please meet at the park’s visitor center to learn about our festive Mistletoe. We will tell stories of how mistletoe became a part of our Christmas spirit. We will have live mistletoe sprigs for participant’s to take home after the program.

      Thursday, January 1, 2014       First Day Hike – Huckleberry and Live Oak Trail Hike       2:00 pm

    First Day Hike – Huckleberry and Live Oak Trail Hike Celebrate the New Year with a short, half-mile hike through Goose Creek’s pine forest and along the Pamlico River. Meet in the last parking lot.

Washington, N.C. – The inaugural Rivers East Advanced Manufacturing Academy took place at Pitt Community College on Friday, September 23rd.
Please join us at the park visitor center on Saturday, October 8th from 3-5 pm where we will host a Halloween Wildlife Event.
We cherish too, the Poppy red that grows on fields where valor led, it seems to signal to the skies that blood of heroes never dies.

The Rivers East Workforce Development Board has been awarded a National Dislocated Worker Grant (NDWTG) in the amount of $275,000 to assist the employees of the QVC Rocky Mount Distribution Center that reside in the Rivers East region.
It began as a light rain Thursday night, January 20th, with temperatures a balmy 46 degrees, and by morning a thin layer of ice clung to the firm, bright reddish green Nandina leaves prevalent upon my personal grounds here in Mac'swood.
