Press Release:

Raleigh, N.C. — Governor Pat McCrory released the following statement on recent legislation.

"The veto of HB 405 publicly exposed its flaws of not fully protecting current employees who report illegal practices in our businesses, including nursing homes, child care centers and veterans treatment facilities. Last week I proudly signed Burt's Law, which requires anyone who sees sexual abuse in a group home to report it. It is very disappointing that the bill overridden today contradicts Burt's Law. I am pleased many legislators who previously supported the bill, publicly recognized that there are opportunities to correct the publicly stated and factual flaws during the current legislative session. I hope they follow through with that commitment.

"Regarding HB 465, some very positive progress was made during the last several days to protect women's health. Working with House and Senate members, we ensured that contact, including a simple phone call, would start a reasonable process that protects women's health, and we also more clearly and rationally defined medical training and qualifications to ensure there will be no further restrictions on access. In addition, there are other provisions that protect children in the bill, something my administration sought. Therefore, I will sign this bill.

"Regarding SB 2, I am pleased there were not enough votes today to override the veto, which was issued to defend the Constitution. The vote should have occurred so that we can move on and refocus on the pressing issues important to the people of North Carolina like creating more jobs, building roads, improving education and growing the economy."
