Dueling Hits - Sam Cooke - 1960 | Eastern NC Now

Most probably would not include this song on their hit parade, but it hit me particular hard in 1960 when as a 15 year old.

Publisher's note: I have initiated this new segment on BCN, where I determine the Best Music Ever. I do this from my opinion, for what that is worth, where I will measure the best music that I am familiar with.

I do this for two reasons: 1) I want to expose the best music that I know to the rest of us. 2) Popular Music today may be the very worst it has ever been, and that is saying much, since I lived through Disco.

For a list of all of the contributions to this series, please click here.

There will be others who share their favorites with the BCN readers, in particular, Bobby Tony.

Sam Cooke explains school and love for the Dueling Musical Greatest

Most probably would not include this song on their hit parade, but it hit me particular hard in 1960 when as a 15 year old.

I was struggling with both girls and books.

I was also trying to learn the guitar and this song had the benefit of a simple chord structure and good rhymes.

Sam had some other great hits but this one transcends the ages for me because at 70 I still don't know much about history, Biology, Science Book, French. I sure as heck do not know much love but I do know some basic math and one and one is two.

Here is the James Taylor and Simon and Garfunkel version. All are on my list to highlight but I think it could have used some more "Pepper". For the young that is a 1960's term "Salt and Pepper".

I also love the James Taylor version of "Wonderful World".
