This same commentary could be written about any other nationality...Or could it?

Steve Allen described in a few words... Refined, Laid-Back/Mellow, Elegant, Sophisticated, Witty, Intimate, Literate, Playful, Reserved, Whimsical & Cerebral.

Did the list leave out Talented?...

Allen was a comedy writer and auth or of more than 50 books, including several volumes of autobiography; children's books; a series of mystery novels; and numerous volumes of essays and opinions. Twenty of his books were concerned with his views about religion.

Allen was a prolific composer who (according to his own estimate) wrote over 8,500 songs, although only a small fraction of these were ever recorded.

From 1977 until 1981, Allen wrote, produced and hosted the award-winning show Meeting of Minds, which aired on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) from 1977 to 1981. The series pitted the likes of Socrates, Marie Antoinette, Thomas Paine, Sir Thomas More, Attila the Hun, Karl Marx, Emily Dickinson, Charles Darwin, and Galileo Galilei, all of whom were acting as if brought back from the past. Their dialogue and heated arguments covered issues such as racism, women's rights, crime and punishment, slavery, and religious toleration."

Here is a link to one of his Social Commentary Essays that is one of my favorite because it is just so darn interesting.

Mia Culpa, after quick trip to the digital library, it shows that I teetered a bit, but did not fall off the high wire. The routine was to have an audience member pick "3" notes which Steve would turn in to a melody. Confirmed from Wikepedia. I could not find a clip illustrating this yet but here is another clip showing him at the piano. The last thing I need to do now is try to learn how to play the piano. That would clear the room for sure at the Village Clubhouse.

Working without benefit of research, which is a as close as I get to a high wire act, I seem to remember a routine Steve had where he asked several members of the audience to pick four notes on the piano randomly. He would then create a musical melody using those four notes. It was amazing for me as a young boy. Only later did I learn that four notes was 1/2 of the available notes if you don't count sharps and flats, but it sure was impressive.

My morning mission in life now is to research this and see if my memory is accurate. I will do so hoping that the net is secure, because a fall from the grace of accuracy is right up there next to leaking a story to the New York Post.

Steve Allen was a smart guy, who kept a keen eye on his craft. An uncompromising fellow like Stevie could make a name for himself right about now.

I think one could argue that Steve Allen was the thinking man's talk show host. I have no idea why I would have been interested in his show, but the Nervous Don Knots, The sly Louis Nye, and the inappropriate Bill Dana as José Jiménez.

The thinking part came out in his interviews and later "Meeting of Minds" which may have stirred an interest in history for me. I agree 100% with Alex's description. Steve was not bound by any inquisitive boundries.

Maybe they should be required watching in schools now. Here is episode 1 season 1 od Meeting of the Minds.

Good one Alex.

Do you ever wonder what Steve Allen would have made of this Snowflake Generation, and all their deliriously stupid comedians pandering to their pansy-asses?
