Press Release:

WASHINGTON, N.C.     Every third Tuesday of the month Beaufort County Community College provides free healthy eating and active living sessions through the Beau-Fitt program designed to help Beaufort County residents learn about healthier choices. This month's session on November 14 will be held in Building 10 at 4:00 p.m. It will feature Mary Parker, a community health instructor, leading a "Hula Hoop Exercise" session and a short eating healthy demo with healthy food samples and smoothies by Fitness Unlimited. This session will include a raffle prize of four foundation classes at Fitness Unlimited.

This year Eastern Elementary and Washington High School employees have joined in the effort. The program held a free exercise Boot Camp in September at Eastern Elementary. In October, BCCC's culinary program offered a free cooking class to participants. AJ Maxey from Fitness Unlimited offered a stretch exercise class that allowed participants to stretch using office chairs, fitness bands and balls. Fifty participants signed up and attended the event. All events are free and open to the community.

Eastern North Carolina has a high percentage of obesity, diabetes and heart disease so a number of organizations are interested in reversing course on these public health issues. The Beau-Fitt program is funded through grants from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust and MDC. The funds helped create the one-mile walking trail with four fitness stations, the exercise monthly sessions and the Garmin fit band program.

The college's Beau-Fitt program offers a variety of fun programs to excite and engage attendees, including college students and seniors, with activities focused on improving the lifestyles of the community. The monthly sessions attract between 50 and 80 people.
