Beaufort County EMS Hurricane Florence Update: September 15, 2018 - 1 | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Beaufort County Emergency Services continues to monitor updates to the storm. Florence has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Beaufort County will continue to feel effects from the storm throughout the day in regard to wind and rain. Winds continue to reduce. Models show sustained winds in the mid-30's mph throughout the day. Gusts are anticipated in the mid-40's mph over the same time. Storm surge water is receding, although slowly, and models show this trend continuing. Many areas are still flooded and remain unsafe. Do not venture out in or drive through flood waters. If you need to evacuate, do so now during daylight hours. If you are in an emergency situation and need evacuation assistance, dial 911.

    Shelter: Beaufort County currently has opened general shelters at Washington High School and P.S. Jones Middle School. The P.S. Jones shelter will close this afternoon and consolidate into the Washington High School shelter. Any new evacuees need to go to the Washington High School shelter. If you need shelter, please move now during daylight hours. Please remember, to bring necessities for several days stay, including blanket and pillow.

    Animals for Shelter Attendees: Animals other than service animals are not allowed at the shelter.

    Power Outages: Beaufort County is still experiencing power outages, but power distribution is being stabilized. The City of Washington is reporting its electrical system stable and with fewer than 100 outages remaining. Tideland EMS and Duke Energy are reporting approximately 6,700 total outages throughout their areas. Restoration crews are working to safely and quickly restore outages. Please notify power agencies directly of outages and check their websites for restoration updates.

    Community Resources: Individuals wishing to donate bottled water and/or canned goods to assist those in need should take those items to Eagles Wings Food Pantry at 932 W. 3rd Street in Washington starting on Monday, September 17th. Eagles Wings will be staffed and available to receive goods at that time. They will also coordinate with other distribution groups throughout the County.

    Please remember that Tropical Storm Florence is still a threat to our community. Please take every action available to keep yourself and your family safe. Local emergency resources and many other resources from outside the County are currently working to

    render services to those in need. Please stay off the roads during this time to allow these emergency resources the ability to work as quickly and safely as possible.

Latest Governing Beaufort County

North Carolina's Rate Bureau has requested for 2024 an annual increase of 42.2%, whereby North Carolina's Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has exhibited a great willingness to take a firm stand against such an exorbitant increase.
I reckon one could always argue that ignorance rests in the eyes of the beholder, but, I'm not taking that bet ... not in these Orwellian times, when so few of our fellow travelers know so little of what is real, and far too much of what otherwise might be terminally fake.

This morning’s update from the National Weather Service (NWS) included an elevated threat of severe weather, to include the possibility of tornados, as well as an increase in the forecasted wind conditions.
Our office is continuing to monitor an approaching cold front that is expected to bring high winds, elevated water levels, rain and the potential for severe storms to our area Tuesday and Wednesday. Forecast details for Beaufort County can be found below.
