Any pastor who holds biblical beliefs on sexual immorality should be alarmed at how Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson has been condemned for his comments about the teaching of same-sex sexual relations in the public schools, says the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League.
Robinson has refused to back down despite calls for his resignation following comments he made this summer.
“There is no reason anybody, anywhere in America should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality or any of that filth,” the Lt. Governor told congregants at Asbury Baptist Church in Seagrove in July. In June, at Upper Room Church of God in Christ, Robinson said, “If there’s a movement in this country that is demonic and is full of the spirit of the antichrist, it is the transgender movement.”
Creech pointed out Robinson’s right to free speech and the fact that his remarks were made in church.
He said that when the issue of same-sex marriage was being debated several years ago, LGBTQ leaders argued for the separation of church and state.
“‘Don’t impose your religious views on us,’ they said. ‘If you want to believe that way that’s your right, but keep it inside your church and out of the public square,’” Creech said. “Now look. They have come inside the church house and are saying that if you are a public official, you don’t have the right to express your religious views on sexual immorality even within the church walls. You must be silenced.”
Robinson, elected last November as the state’s first African-American lieutenant governor, said during a press conference on Tuesday that his comments about “filth” were in reference to inappropriate sexual materials in our state’s schools, including “Gender Queer,” a graphic novel depicting sexual fantasies and behaviors, and “George,” in which a boy wants to remove his genitals so he can become a girl.
Some Democratic lawmakers have insisted that Robinson’s remarks prove that he hates the LGBTQ community. But Robinson said his issue is with what he called “pornographic” material in schools, regardless of whether it involves men with men, women with women, or men with women.
Earlier this week, a group of LGBTQ-supporting faith and community leaders demanded that Robinson apologize publicly for his comments and that he agree to meet with LGBTQ leaders. They said if he doesn’t meet their demands, he should resign.
But Robinson has stood his ground. At his press conference, he said he is the one under attack, and he played a voicemail in which a caller used racial slurs and said he should be hung.
The Rev. Creech says Robinson should not apologize for speaking the truth. He urged pastors to speak up for him.
“Robinson called the teaching of homosexuality ‘filth.’ Well, here’s the way the Bible describes that sexual activity: ’detestable,’ ‘shameful acts,’ ‘shameful lusts,’ ‘unnatural,’ ‘perversion,’ and ‘the pollution of one’s own body.’ These expressions are taken directly from the Scriptures. So how long do you think it will be before these folks claim the Bible should be silenced, not only in the public square but in church because of its alleged discriminatory message?” Creech asked. “I think pastors ought to be alarmed and make some public statement of support both inside and outside the church in support of the Lt. Gov’s right to express his religious views, especially within the church. Calls for his resignation are preposterous and an attack on free religious expression.”
